Cheney High School DECA club members put their marketing skills to work this year, raising a record $2,010 dollars to donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
The club presented a giant check to Theresa Norman, a representative from Ronald McDonald House, which provides reduced cost housing for families with a hospitalized child.
“Each year we choose a different charity,” DECA member Millie Holy said. “We knew it was a good thing to help parents stay with their kids in the hospital.”
The club raises funds throughout the year, selling cappuccinos and cookies from a booth they man in the mornings before school and during lunch periods.
“We give up our time to sell,” DECA member Raman Kaur said.
The total donation was a record for the club; they had previously raised as much as $1,300.
“I think each year it's just increasing,” Kaur said, adding that students are more likely to buy from their booth because they know the proceeds go to charity.
“We don't keep any of the money,” Holy added.
Eight students were members of DECA this year, a club that prepares students for careers in marketing through competitions and skill-building. The students must be in a marketing class to be a member of the club.
Jeff Pike, marketing teacher and DECA advisor, said he was very proud of the students' work.
“I think they were very motivated to exceed expectations,” he said in an e-mail. “The DECA students this year are a great bunch. They worked well together and applied their classroom and academic knowledge to the school store.”
