Turnbull Wildlife Refuge and the Spokane Audubon Society will host a community work party on Saturday, May 15, at the refuge in celebration of International Migratory Bird Day. The work parties are part of ongoing community efforts to restore native riparian habitat to benefit birds and other wildlife species.
Volunteers will be helping to plant more than 40 native saplings, along with erecting protective fencing to guard the new trees against deer, elk and moose browsing. Everyone is welcome to attend and help out.
The work party takes place from 9 a.m. to noon, with lunch immediately following. Please call the refuge headquarters at 235-4723, ask for Sandy, to register in advance so that staff will know how many to plan for when preparing lunch. Discovery School will be providing hamburgers, and participants are invited to bring a favorite dish of food.
Suggested clothing are long-sleeve shirts, work pants, sturdy boots or shoes and gloves. If you can, please bring shovels and pliers.
