Spangle annexation completed

After more than a year of work, the Spangle Cemetery District successfully annexed the downtown area of Spangle.

The action will bring more tax revenue to the district, which secretary/treasurer Eleanor Hill said will likely help the district get back in the black.

Due to outdated laws and conflicting rules, the town of Spangle itself was not included when the cemetery district was formed in 1971. So starting in October 2008, cemetery board members circulated petitions that were eventually signed by 70 percent of the registered voters in the district. The signatures were then certified by the Spokane County election board and approved by the County Commissioners Dec. 15.

Hill said adding the tiny city to the district will help raise the district's revenue to pay for spring cleanup and year-round maintenance in the cemeteries. The district is limited to a tax of 8 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, so Spangle residents won't see much of a change in their tax bill.
