Eastern Washington University will celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday this month with a speech and school supply drive.
Angela Schwendiman, a lecturer in Africana Studies at EWU, will be the featured speaker during the university's MLK Day celebration beginning at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Showalter 109. The topic of Schwendiman's discussion will be “Ambassadors of Peace During Times of War: Comparing Strategies and Analogies of U.S. President Barack Obama and Civil Rights Activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”
In addition to the speech, the Africana Education Program is sponsoring the “A Day On, Not a Day Off” school supply drive through Friday, Jan. 22.
School supply items for Cheney grade school students can be dropped off at the EWU Bookstore in the Pence Union Building, the Africana Education Program office, 204 Monroe or at the Cheney Dollar Store, 2424 First St.
Items needed include erasers, crayons, glue sticks, #2 pencils, pens, boxes of tissues and white notebook paper. All contributions will be distributed by Cheney Outreach. For information, call 359-2205.
