The city of Cheney is looking for individuals to fill seats on two separate boards. Currently there are open seats on the Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission.
The Planning Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the mayor and members of City Council. Its purpose is to prepare a comprehensive plan for development within the city, and to make recommendations to the council on matters related to planning, zoning, and development issues.
Planning Commission members must live inside the Cheney city limits and be available for one monthly meeting, on the second Monday of each month. Members are appointed for four-year terms.
The Historic Preservation Commission is charged with “identifying and actively encouraging conservation of the city's historic resources.” This involves maintenance of a local Register of Historic Places, reviewing proposed changes to register properties, and raising community awareness of the city's history and historic resources.
Members of the Historic Preservation Commission may not have a residency requirement if they have professional or educational qualifications relating to history, architecture, real estate, or a similar field. Historic Preservation Commission meetings are also held monthly on the first Thursday. Members are appointed for three-year terms.
Persons interested in serving on one of these boards should submit a letter of interest to the Office of the Mayor, 609 Second St. Cheney WA 99004. For more information, contact the Community Development Department at 498-9240.
