When Camp Lutherhaven shut down late this summer due to tainted water, Jen Hamilton's kids had to stay home. She doesn't want that to happen again.
“Camp Lutherhaven was important to me as a kid and I want my kids to experience that,” she said.
That's why Hamilton organized the Festival of Chocolate at Emmanuel Lutheran Church to benefit the camp's new water supply.
The event is Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the church, located at 639 Elm St. in Cheney. Volunteers will create their favorite chocolate desserts for attendees to sample, Hamilton said. Admission is free but donations will be happily accepted, she said.
Lutherhaven, a camp on Lake Coeur d'Alene, had to drill a new well after a water test showed unacceptable levels of bacteria in August.
Camp executive director Bob Baker said the cost of the new well and all the work, engineering and installation costs and lost revenues totaled $150,000.
“I wasn't really concerned because our donors are really faithful,” Baker said. And so far, he's been right. The camp has already raised $100,000 to pay for the fix.
Hamilton just hopes the local event will draw people who send their kids to Lutherhaven or support the cause.
Plus, she said, with all the church ladies baking, molding and simmering chocolate, “You're talking about a lot of really yummy homemade treats.”
