Cheney's Aaron Byrd wrapped up his high school golfing career with an 18th-place finish at the 2A boys' state championships, held May 27-28 at Apple Tree Golf Resort in Yakima.
The Blackhawks' senior shot a first round 77 on Wednesday and a second-round 76 Thursday, lifting him six spots in the final standings, for a two-day score of 153, finishing in a tie with Tumwater High School's Tommy Kjorlaug and South Whidbey's Bruce Guetlin. Byrd was the fifth highest finisher among Great Northern League competitors at state. Clarkston's Tyler Carlson topped the list with a 146, finishing eighth overall, 11 strokes back of state champion Matt Rawitzer of Squalicum.
This was Byrd's second consecutive trip to the state match. Last year he failed to make the second-day cut.
Cheney's Mary Fuqua also made the trip to Yakima to compete in the girls' state match. The sophomore shot an opening round 103, but missed the cut by six spots, needing to score a 100 or less to advance to the second day.
