Earlier this month, members of Spokane County's Sheriff Community Oriented Policing Effort, a.k.a. SCOPE, picked their most valuable volunteers for the year for 2008, and for Medical Lake's station, that person was Barbara Enright.

SCOPE's 17 stations spread throughout the county each decided the nomination criteria for their chosen volunteer, according to county SCOPE director, Rick Scott. SCOPE members provide many hours of service to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office and their respective communities each year, and this award was one of many the county gives out in recognition of volunteers' dedication to community service and safety.

A member of SCOPE for about six years, Enright manages the Medical Lake office, working mainly from her home coordinating schedules and events for SCOPE, directing flags at recent community fund runs, Operation Family ID events and more, ML SCOPE member Gee Sutherland said.

“We've 35 other members, and she put in a lot of time more than anyone else,” she said of Enright, who is retired.

Medical Lake doesn't have as many volunteers as other SCOPE stations do, she said, mostly because it requires a lot of training and a background check that many fail to pass. But, she added, “Medical Lake is an easy place to work. The city gives us a building, pays for the phone, the heat and it's helped us to do what we do around here.”

Enright declined requests for an interview for this article due to her feeling that the station's other volunteers were deserved of this honor as much as she. She did state that Medical Lake's SCOPE members should all be commended for putting in an impressive amount of hours this past summer volunteering at five triathlon events and three community food drives for Medical Lake Food Bank.

Scott said it's been a banner year for neighborhood watch recruitment, with applications coming in daily throughout the county. SCOPE hopes to add a new station in Elk, Wash., and in the coming months looks to combine its existing Fairfield and Rockford stations, plus a few other adjoining stations, into one location and rename that post South County SCOPE.

Also receiving SCOPE's Most Valuable Volunteer award for 2008: Terry Munro, Eastern Washington University/Cheney; Mark Fralich, Central Valley; Darrell Patrick, SCOPE East; Ron Gaede, Fairchild; Clifford Cook, Liberty Lake; Barbara Rorrer, Newman Lake; Marilyn Miller, SCOPE; Esther Faulkner, Trentwood; Jennifer Glenn, West Valley; Nancy Hopkins, Deer Park; Karen Gallion, Edgecliff; Theresa Fisher, Fairfield; Michelle LeVar, mounted patrol; Diana Hanna, Nine Mile; Walt Clouse, Spring Hill; Dick Ott, University.
