Fire destroys Cheney home

Smoldering rubble, structure supports and a floor are about all that's left of a Cheney trailer home.

The resident, a young man in his early 20s was awakened by a popping and crackling sound from within his home late Tuesday afternoon. He opened the door to the bedroom and was met by a heavy smoke. He jumped out his bedroom window to safety.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Cheney Fire Chief Mike Winters said there were no other occupants or pets.

The blaze happened in a unit at the north end of Presnell's Trailer Park, which is next to Bi-Mart and parallels First Street.

Winters said the home was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene so they were not able to save it. The trailer is a total loss. He had high praise, saying that firefighters did a great job of protecting the two other trailers on each side of the one burning. Firefighters also contended with arcing power lines during the blaze.

Winters said the resident had no smoke detectors. He stresses the necessity of having them, especially those living in trailers.

“When you sleep, the first sense you lose is your sense of smell, and it's the last to return when you wake up,” Winters said.
