Once again this year, the city of Cheney is pleased to provide the public with a convenient means of disposing of their yard waste material. The Cheney yard waste site is located next to the Cheney Recycling Center at 100 Anderson Road. The yard waste program has proven to be extremely beneficial in that the yard waste that is disposed of by the public is used as a bulking agent in the production of the city's bio-solid compost. Yard waste is hauled from the yard waste disposal site out to the city's advanced wastewater treatment plant where the yard waste is run through a grinder to create a fine mulch material. The ground yard waste is then mixed with sludge and wood chips to create EcoGreen which is an exceptional soil amendment.
The yard waste site will be open to the public beginning on Friday, March 14, 2008. Only acceptable yard waste materials can be disposed of at the site. The following are acceptable yard waste materials: Leaves, grass clippings, pinecones, pine needles, weeds (except herbicide tainted material), brush, pruning and branches (no larger than two inches in diameter and four feet in length). Any bagged material must be removed from the bags prior to disposal in the yard waste boxes.
EcoGreen will go on sale in bulk quantities to the public beginning on Friday, March 28, 2008. The city will load the bulk material for the public from the hours of 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each Friday beginning on March 28 and on each Friday thereafter through the fall. EcoGreen bought in bulk sells for $12 a yard plus sales tax. The city also sells EcoGreen by the bag which is a finer screened material and can be purchased for $5 plus sales tax.
