Nationally renowned author and speaker Bruce Brown will be coming to Cheney for a presentation on redefining the term “athlete” – life lessons for all athletes.
The presentation is open to all students, coaches, parents, community members and leaders and will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Cheney High School Theatre.
Brown believes that one of the best opportunities for individual character growth in young people happens when adults, such as coaches and parents, clearly identify and support behaviors that are expected and clearly define and confront behaviors that are not acceptable. Looking beyond athletic skills and identifying qualities and choices every player can make on a daily basis that propels young people towards becoming a better person and teammate, Brown's presentation challenges players to become “athletes” as well as defining how they can individually improve their team.
Brown has developed his views and understanding of athletics through 35 years as a teacher, coach, athletics administrator at all levels from junior high through college. Some of the awards Brown has received are the 2002 NAIA National Co-athletic Director of the Year, the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award-Citizenship through Sports Alliance, the 2004 College of the Ozarks and coach Mike Kryzewski Leadership/Service Award and the 2005 American Baseball Coaches “Honor” Award with Cal Ripken, Jr.
Brown is currently the director of Proactive Coaching, and has spoken to a wide variety of organizations and institutions throughout the U.S.
