President Arévalo forms new EWU partnership in Mexico

Eastern Washington University President Rodolfo Arévalo and Rector José Ma. Leal Gutiérrez, the president of Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT), signed an agreement between the two universities on Monday, Dec. 9, during a ceremony in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico.

Exploration of a EWU-UAT partnership began more than a year ago, at the invitation of UAT.

UAT has long-standing partnerships with other universities in the United States, Europe and South America.

UAT Rector Gutiérrez and his administrative team previously worked with Arévalo on productive educational exchanges during Arévalo's tenure at The University of Texas-Pan American.

UAT's interest in working with Arévalo on similar collaborations with EWU led to the new memorandum of agreement for exchanges of students, faculty and staff for purposes of study, joint programs and research.

Located in the oil and natural gas rich state of Tamaulipas, UAT has created a network of campuses and E-Learning sites to reach all residents of the state.

Substantive EWU-UAT partnership meetings surrounding the signing ceremony occurred at campuses in Victoria and Tampico, Tamaulipas.

Arévalo was accompanied by Dr. Michael Frumkin, dean of EWU's School of Social Work, and Dr. Jim Perez and Dr. Susan Hales from the Division for International and Educational Outreach.

The EWU delegation met with UAT deans of social work, business, and education and humanities to share information and identify common areas of interest.
