A 30-year-old Geiger Corrections officer was arrested on a felony assault charge Friday after he threatened a fellow officer over competing shift bid interests.
Jesus A. Garcia was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a second degree assault charge Friday evening. He has two weeks seniority over the other officer.
Deputy Jesse Depriest was dispatched to the Geiger Corrections facility shortly after the 2 p.m. incident.
His investigation revealed that the victim and Garcia had engaged in an ongoing shift bid discussion, sometimes heated, over the past several days.
Today, Garcia entered the control room where the victim was seated.
After more discussion about who would bid what shift, the suspect grabbed the victim's hat from his head.
There was further discussion and the suspect left the room.
However, he re-entered the room minutes later with the blade of his multi-plier tool exposed and extended from his hand.
He held the blade to the groin of the victim and glared at the officer.
After a few seconds, he moved the knife away from the victim who then reported the matter.
Capt. John McGrath , interim Geiger Corrections Director, said Friday afternoon that both officers were immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal review. Both are off probation, but have worked at Geiger for little more than a year.
Geiger Corrections will become a division of the Spokane County Sheriff's Office in January.
