A benefit dinner and silent auction will be held for Anna Flatt on Saturday, June 23 at the Knights of Columbus located at 302 E. Boone in Spokane, from 4-7 pm.
Flatt is a long-time Cheney resident diagnosed in April 2006 with multiple myeloma, a blood borne cancer that affects the plasma cells and bone marrow. She will be traveling to Seattle this month, accompanied by her husband of 25 years, Joe, to receive a stem cell transplant and extensive chemotherapy treatments. The proceeds from this event will help cover expenses that will be incurred.
The treatment is quite expensive and requires the patient and a caregiver to reside in Seattle in close proximity to the facility. Living expenses alone can average anywhere from $2,500-$3,000 per month. The average stay is two to four months, depending upon the patient's response to the transplant.
In addition, Anna Flatt will be out of work for up to a year due to a compromised immune system. Individuals unable to attend the benefit but wishing to help out the family, donations will be accepted at any Washington Mutual branch.
Donations may be directed to the Anna Flatt Benevolent Account. The cost for the event is $7 for adults and $5 for children age 10 and under.
Sponsors of the benefit are still looking for items for the silent auction. Area residents who would like to donate items for the silent auction may do so by calling Karen Haight at 235-4518.
