Eastern Washington University Professor William J. Kelley was given the Outstanding Planner award at the recent American Planning Association Conference in Philadelphia.
The Small Town and Rural Planning Division chose Kelley from multiple nominees around the country.
He is a professor of urban and regional planning with Eastern's College of Business and Public Administration.
In nominating Kelley for the award, former students and his colleagues acknowledged his 30 years of teaching.
During that time, Kelley has made many contributions to small towns through projects like rural transit, scenic byways, comprehensive plans, tribal planning projects, watershed studies, infrastructure assessment and economic revitalization.
“What has remained constant over the years has been his effort to integrate teaching, service and scholarship in meaningful and beneficial ways for both students and clients,” wrote students and colleagues.
“While Eastern is considered an urban regional planning program, most of my work has been in rural towns,” said Kelley. “I've enjoyed that because those communities have fewer resources and welcome our help.”
Eastern's urban planning programs currently offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees, which are professionally accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board.
