Watch out for National Deed Service scam

The Spokane County Auditor's Office has issued a warning: There's a new scam targeting property owners.

Since May 18, many homeowners in this area have been receiving letters from National Deed Service Inc., whereby the company offers deeds for a cost of $59.50.

The auditor's office has reported that the letter has caused some anxiety and has generated a fair number of phone calls.

Homeowners are not required to have physical copies of their deeds in their possession. Deeds are recorded at the Auditor's Office to ensure that:

- They are permanently available to survive the test of time and natural disasters.

- The public can view them.

- They can be copied for a minimal fee.

In Washington state, certified copies of deeds are $3 for the first page and $1 for each additional page. Most residential property deeds are one- to two-pages long, so the cost is considerably less than what National Deed Service charges.

Representatives from the federal government and the Better Business Bureau have stated they do not endorse the company's services.
