Welcome to the senior class of 2025

Series: Senior Journal | Story 1

We made it!

My name is Keely Fournier and I’m a senior at Rosalia High School as well as a sophomore at Eastern Washington University. Welcome to the Senior Journal where I will be discussing the challenges that we seniors face including community service hours, senior projects, college applications, fund raising, and everything in between.

This is one of the most stressful years we will face in our teenage years, but also one of the best. It is the year where we grow into adulthood, learn lifelong lessons, and make decisions that will impact our future .While this year may seem daunting, I am creating this journal so that someone out there can relate to it or learn from it.

So what senior events are happening near you? Senior sunrise or sunset, spirit week let me know!

Some memorable moments have already taken place; Cheney High School kicked off the year with Senior Sunrise on August 26th. Davenport High School is starting the year with Tessa Cormier and her amazing senior project!

Tessa is organizing the Dress Drive, a project to help girls have access to formal dresses without the cost. For girls who don’t have formal wear for milestone events such as Homecoming and Prom, this provides the access needed. Tessa’s mission is to get individuals to donate old or unused formal dresses for girls who need them. The dresses will be free after donation and open to any girl. The event will take place from September 25th to the 28th from 5-6 p.m. at Davenport High School.

According to the website College Data, statistically 47% of the challenges high school senior’s faces are college applications. With them just around the corner or some even starting now, we’re kicking off the year with high anxiety levels and the rabbit hole of figuring out what I actually want to make of myself.

Based on the same study 38% of seniors claim that writing their application essay is their biggest hurdle. So what can you do to overcome or help relieve some stress from that? Start by thinking of your theme and the challenge you overcame. If that’s a struggle read others essays or even find outlines to help create a rough draft. Remember these colleges are looking at your grades and your story; you can have the same grades as hundreds of people but what makes you stand out, what makes you better? That will be a grabbing hook. While you write your essay remember this is your story to share, show how you overcame the struggles and how you grew from them.

The Senior Journal will reach across counties so feel free to email or call the Cheney Free Press. This will be a weekly column where I will go in-depth on senior events and provide tips to help seniors navigate the balance of work, school, sports, and life in general.
