  • Cantola's Cheney Yard of the Month

    Updated Jul 15, 2021

Jeff and Kim Cantola, 416 G. St., have been named Cheney's Yard of the month for July. They have lived in this house for just about a year, and are getting acquainted with the well-established yard. Things are blooming at different times, much to their delight. The only planting they have had to do was to replace a tree in the front yard that was taken out by a runaway car. The tree they chose to plant was Aphrodite Althea. The Kiwanis Club and the Gardeners of Cheney...

  • Strokes of Luck

    Stan Moore|Updated Jul 15, 2021

It is time to leave poker behind and get a life. With 10 credits in hand and a renewed teaching certificate, its north to Alaska. Three days later I rill into Anchorage, sleep challenged but with two live head lights peeking through a mobile mudpack. After a shower, a long winter’s nap and absolutely the best breakfast I’ve ever eaten, I pack off to the district office of education. “What do you teach?” the bland clerk asks. “Language Arts. K-12. Minor in math,” I recite. “Follow me,” she directs and disappears left...

    Updated Jul 8, 2021

Many of you have probably been camped in a high mountain meadow and awaked to the stars shining brightly overhead. While still snuggled in your warm blankets, you have listened to the mysterious noises of the night as the eastern sky begins to show light. You hold your breath and hear the distant reassuring tinkle of the horse bells. Then you know that God is close by and everything is all right with your world. SYMPHONY OF THE DAWN Ode to an old camp cook by Vern Hopkins The camp in sleeping silence lay Stars fading one by...

  • Rituals

    CAROL BEASON, Contributor|Updated Jul 1, 2021

I grew up with strong rituals, a set hour for bedtime and arising the next morning, three meals served much the same time each day, every day, home by 6:00 each evening. A day for laundry. A day for ironing, etc. Dependable, scheduled, ritualized. Raised in a Catholic Church and attending a parochial school further entrenched age old rituals that were engrained down through generations, becoming an integral part of one’s being. We are a ritualized society, ruled by the seasons, accomplishing tasks in a time of accepted n...

  • Summer Breeze

    Venus Bratsveen|Updated Jun 24, 2021

Summer breeze makes me feel fine Blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind The refrain from a song by Seals & Crofts always heralds summer’s joys for me. I listened to it while writing this piece. “Summer Breeze” reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. Now my mind drifts to 1972. I was nine years old and I remember soaking up sunshine & pool water at the Bern Township pool. I’m taken back to that delightful, simple time when anything was possible and everything was perfect. Reverie. I’ve just closed my eyes again Climb...

We could go there because they have outdoor tables. So we got to the restaurant and we got a table near three ladies. One of the ladies had a cute little dog s...

Be sure to include some broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, and turnip greens. These cruciferous vegetables release cancer fighting substances that help fend off lung, breast, liver, colon, and prostate cancer. Three...
