During a recent session, the prompt was “bread.” Though sometimes similar, no two pieces are the same. Here are three of the impromptu works: Bread By Venus Bratsveen Bread, bread It’s in my head My tummy calls To line its walls With beautiful, yummy bread. Bread, scratch, dough, moolah, the Benjamins, green backs, cash not coin, tender, bucks. It’s all the...

  • AGING

    Updated Sep 9, 2021

Carol Beason 5 May 2016 Aging - Is only a matter of mind, if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter, this according to Mark Twain. Aging begins at conception and only accelerates as we grow older, the concept of which is often lost on some. Something most of us don’t want to acknowledge. And who can blame us? The focus is on beauty, youth and productivity. Our society adores the young and often times ignores the aging process. We soon forget why we came to earth in the first place so lose our focus. The older we get the more invis...

  • Dr. Hough retires after 38 years of service

    SCOTT DAVIS, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 2, 2021

CHENEY - After 38 years of continuous service to the Cheney Community, Doctor Charles Hough is finally hanging up his stethoscope – well, sort of. “Once you’ve worked 55-to-60-hour weeks for 38 years, you can’t just stop. I look at this as a transition time to keep working but trying to learn to take time off and be OK with that,” Hough said with a smile. “I’m a box checker, we’re all box checkers, right?” It’s that “box checking” attitude – supplemented by an intere...

  • Put kitchen scraps, landscape trimmings to work in the garden

    MELINDA MYERS, Contributor|Updated Aug 26, 2021

Convert landscape and garden trimmings into valuable compost. Incorporate this soil amendment into garden soil to improve drainage in clay soil and increase water-holding ability in fast draining sandy soils. It also promotes healthy plant growth more resistant to insect and disease problems and keeps plant-based kitchen scraps and garden waste out of landfills. Composting is as simple as placing disease- and insect-free plant debris into a pile and letting it rot. Don’t add meat, dairy, or fat that attracts rodents or w...

  • Old woman who writes

    Updated Aug 26, 2021

There was an old woman who just had to write She composed and erased most of the night She did much of her work at a quarter past two Some of her work was not even true She wrote of sweet blossoms on crabapple trees Of ice crystal daggers on edges of eaves She wrote of the children she’d known in her life And when she was younger and was a dear wife Though much of her stories would never be heard Wild celebrations she captured in word She often wrote novels that stayed on her shelf Just waiting for someone to honor their w...

    Updated Aug 19, 2021

By MELINDA MYERS Contributor Enjoy and share the beauty of your flower garden all year long. Pick and dry a few flowers to use in flower arrangements, craft projects or as gifts for friends and family. Pick the flowers when they are at peak bloom and blossoms are dry. Cut flowers for drying mid-day when they contain less moisture to reduce the dry time. Use a bypass pruner or garden scissors to cut the stems above a set of healthy leaves. Remove the foliage and gather them...

  • Marvin and Blake and the Outhouse

    Delores Kriete|Updated Aug 19, 2021

A few years ago I attended a retirement party for a friend retiring from the railroad where he had worked for over 40 years. The dinner was good, and his co-workers provided good-natured ribbing at Blake’s expense. One coworker had been his partner for over 25 years. He told this story they both swear was true. The names have been changed to protect the guilty. Marvin and Blake were on their way to work driving down a rural road when they passed a deserted farm house nestled in a grove of trees. Suddenly Blake cried out, “Sto...

  • Harvest and enjoy mint from the garden

    MELINDA MYERS, Contributor|Updated Aug 12, 2021

Add a bit of cool flavor to your beverages, meals and desserts this summer with homegrown mint. Try using peppermint leaves in fruit cocktails and ice cream. Add spearmint to your tea or use the leaves to season lamb and jelly. Or try chocolate mint for a unique, sweet and refreshing flavor in desserts and drinks. Mint is easy to grow and suited to container gardens. In fact, growing it in a pot will help keep this vigorous herb contained. Or sink a container of mint in the garden or plant where surrounding walks and walls...

  • Metamorphosis

    Lisa Conger|Updated Aug 12, 2021

The sporty convertible darts in and out of traffic like a hummingbird. It’s green color shimmering iridescent in the sun. Then a cherry red vintage VW approaches, reminiscent of a ladybug flying her way home. And a truck’s lost retread— called an alligator for its resemblance to that creature— lies curled on the side of the road. Inanimate things suddenly alive and enormous— what if these imaginative fleets of fancy come true? Would it be a fantastical dream, or a nightmare? Only the dreamer knows. Lisa Conger July 11, 2021...

She was in the hospital for a week prior to passing. She was a woman who generally did whatever the hell she wanted. Back in her heyday, her wild and wooly youth, she was a rebel, a rowdy girl ahead of her time. She never accomplished anything earth shattering, or changed the l...

  • Washington State Trivia

    Delores Kriete|Updated Jul 22, 2021

A while back I received a phone call that turned out to be a wrong number. The person calling didn’t have access to the phone book in our area, so I looked up the number for them. After I was done, I started flipping through the North Central Washington phone book and found some trivial points of interest I was surprised to see. I found a list of the Washington symbols. Many of them I already knew. For instance, I knew Washington is the only state named after a president. Its flower is the Rhododendron, and the bird is the Go...
