The appearance was part of the symphony’s “Out and About” concert series. The traveling series intends to provide something unique to local communities and integrate the symphony into people’s everyday lives. There is much talk among Spokane County gardeners about raised beds. I’m not referring to the bunk beds your kids and grand kids jumped from but the intentionally framed structures surrounding an ample amount of soil. However, the recycled kid’s bed is a possibility for very short or very tall gardeners. The whole idea of raised beds is to eliminate a degree of back and knee pain. Also, the elevated growing surface is usually a happy place for plants. At my house, where rocks and clay seem to be the prominent feature in my so...

Gardeners of Cheney, Kiwanis, and Jarm's Ace Hardware are delighted to award this beautiful yard Cheney's Yard of the Month for May....

If you belong to the DIYG’s “Do it Yourself Gardeners,” temptations at nurseries and garden centers are endless. I find the tool isle especially intriguing. Glittering steel rakes and battery-powered diggers and weeders, Ah, the joy of it all. However, my tool belt includes a good quality hand pruner, pocket-size fold-up saw, a strong weed prong, rubber hose washers, and a flathead and Phillips screwdriver (for hose and irrigation line repair). It also includes a small jar of *Vick’s Vapor Rub to repel biting insects...

  • SURPRISE!

    Lisa Conger|Updated Apr 28, 2022

While in grade school, when my mother was in the hospital for months, my grandmother came to take care of us. She looked stern, but was soft-hearted. She read to us from the Little House series, and told us about her life as a girl on a Montana homestead. She taught us how to make and sail walnut boats in the sink. She wore dark dresses, and sturdy shoes. Fascinating to us, she kept her false teeth in a glass beside her bed at night. When we came home from school for lunch, she made us sandwiches using one slice of white...

  • My favorite brownie recipe

    Eleanor Stilwill-Kirkpatrick|Updated Apr 28, 2022

My grandmother’s kitchen was a wonderful place where the fragrance of canning spices defused throughout the entire house. There was always something good to eat in her fridge, a variety of home canned fruit and veggies in her pantry, and plenty of ice-cream in the freezer. It was the place her children and grandchildren congregated nearly every Sunday afternoon for dinner. Weekly family gatherings were more common then. My grandparents owned the only appliance/television/music store in Moses Lake. The store was profitable e...

Again, I found myself at the grocery store with a bad attitude. Are you kidding me? I fumed at the produce manager—$3.00 for a green pepper? I stomped out of the vegetable section, bought some packets of seeds and left the store in a huff. I stopped at the hardware store and purchased some “Soil for Seed Starting.” Visions of colorful jars of canned veggies danced in my head all the way home. I had saved stacks of plastic cups and poked three holes in the bottom of each one. To insure there were no contaminants in my recyc...

  • SBOH votes against pursuing COVID-19 vaccine requirements for school

    Elizabeth Hovde, Contributor|Updated Apr 21, 2022

The Washington State Board of Health unanimously passed a motion to accept the recommendation from a technical advisory group (TAG) against a COVID-19 immunization requirement for school entry. Board members did reiterate support for the COVID-19 vaccines and hoped for voluntary vaccination of school children. The vote against a vaccine mandate for school children came after an hour-and-a-half of public comment and thousands of emails over the past months opposing such a requirement. (My public comment is included below.) I...

  • Spring 2022

    John Barber|Updated Apr 21, 2022

Time. Time is movement. Movement is time. Time is change. Change is movement. Change, movement and time are all the same concept. What we consider as clock time is just our assigning measurement to the day’s rotation of the earth. A year is a measure of the orbit of earth around the sun. From the electrons moving around the nuclei of atoms that make up all substance, to the incomprehensible vastness of infinite space, movement/ change/ time never ceases. Our planet is 24,901.5 miles in circumference at the equator. The 24 h...

Tika loves her walks in the morning. She follows me endlessly, ensuring I don’t get off-track and do something useless like grab a tea or say, wake up before rushing out the door to go to the park. Mornings are time for fast, goal oriented movements. Get dressed, throw some mouthwash in that trash can you call a mouth and get out the door. And so my mornings go. Every single morning, rain, shine, snow, sleet and or hail—well you get the picture. There’s no sleeping in for me unless I’m sick. I know this sounds whiny and it...

All you windowsill gardeners, container, raised bed, and in-ground gardeners too, by now you have probably named most of your plants. Rosemary, Thyme, Sage and their friend Parsley, Tomato, Pepper, Zucchini. Black-eyed Susan, Daisy and Cosmos all are showing off their grown up leaves. These nick-names for plants are great but when you are trying to find out more about their specific cultures it is good to understand their Latin names as well. It really isn't hard to do as ther...

  • A Moment

    Venus Bratsveen|Updated Apr 8, 2022

How does the song go? “I close my eyes. Only for a moment then the moment’s gone.” (Dust in the Wind, Kansas- Eric Benet) Oh, but a sweet moment. There is a place I go to de-stress, unwind, and just relax. I don’t have to change out of my pajamas or comb my hair. I don’t have to drive anywhere. It’s my thinking place and I do close my eyes. This is a dreamy collection of several places that make me happy. I come here whenever I need it. It’s spring time in New Mexico. I’m walking in a forest edged meadow. The sun is warm on...

  • Compliments to the chef!

    Eleanor Kirkpatrick|Updated Apr 8, 2022

My family was of British origin. Most dinners were prepared in a pressure cooker. Vegetables were cooked to baby food consistency and recognizable only by the color, green, purple, off-white, yellow, orange. Meat, if not pressure cooked, was fried or baked to hard crack. We were often served boiled beef tongue (identifiable by the taste buds), beef heart, kidney and calves’ liver. The only food my mother under cooked was oysters, which she coated in crushed saltines and fried for 5–10 seconds max. The gag reflex was tes...
