  • Soul of the Hunter

    Vern Hopkins|Updated Feb 23, 2023

Home is the hunter Home from the hills With fragrance of Sage and pine He tracked the white goats The stately bull elk The great bear that Roams on the line He traveled the paths Of lion and wolf And drank from Glacier-fed streams His heart lingers there At timberline bare His soul drank from Nature-fed dreams The warmth of his hearth Is welcome indeed With love in the arms Waiting there His loved ones know Soon he must go With the eagles again They must share When sirens are singing Their wilderness song The pull on his...

  • February in the garden

    Margaret A. Swenson|Updated Feb 9, 2023

February 2023 We may actually be able to be in the garden or close to it this month. Inside we can trim and fertilize herbs we wintered over. An application of half strength indoor plant food will regenerate healthy growth. After Valentine cards have been opened and the last chocolate in the box is gone it is time once again to survey jobs outside. The evidence of marcescens, the holding on of leaves this winter, may soon give way to the phenomenon known as abscission, the letting loose of leaves. If the ground is soggy...

  • The Family Portrait

    Venus Bratsveen|Updated Feb 2, 2023

Lizzy was a busy wife and mother of three. Three precocious children who never sat still. They even slept restless. Each morning Lizzy would wake her little angels, remake beds from scratch, sigh and get on with her day. Lizzy’s husband Carl worked as a car salesman at one of the local dealerships. He was a friendly, hard working and honest man who put in long hours and sold many cars and trucks. They were doing well financially and decided to invest in a Family Portrait Plan from a well known local photography studio. L...

Our battle ground is a well prepared patch of soil, whether on the ground, in raised beds, or a greenhouse. Even a seed starting tray on the top of your refrigerator can encourage seeds to germinate. Weapons for this battle to protect the pocketbook include good seed starting soil, a dibble for seed placement, containers to transplant young seedlings, spades,...

A fire broke out at a 5th Street home on Wed. 11, 1939, and caused an estimated $1,000 in damages. In today’s dollars this would be over $21,000. The fire department arrived on the scene shortly after 8:00pm, and were able to subdue the flames roughly an hour later. • 2023

    John Barber|Updated Jan 12, 2023

We are celebrating a new year on our Gregorian calendar, 2023. This number counts the duration of our particular Western European culture. The bigger the number, the longer we have lasted. It is, though, just a number. If it wasn’t for Pope Gregory, that number would be different. Until then we were operating on the Julian calendar initiated by Julius Caesar. On that calendar the dates of the Solstices and Equinoxes drifted over time. The Pope was most interested in keeping Easter near the Spring Equinox and the old pagan r...

  • A New Year

    Venus Bratsveen|Updated Jan 6, 2023

A new year inspires us with the hope of a new beginning and opportunities abound. We see this as a chance to try new things, strengthen our resolve to do better, do more, be more. Winter is waning and spring is just around the corner. With spring comes new growth. Is it any wonder our hearts quicken at the thought? A new year means new adventures, new promises or renewed promises to ourselves and others. As I write, the very thought of it makes me smile. What will I resolve to do or do better in the coming year? There are so...

THE OLD MAN Carol Beason 16 December 2021 Our town was run down at the heels and everyone lived just this side of disaster but that didn’t mean we weren’t proud of what we had. We picked up trash, kept wayward weeds mowed down, nurtured our gardens, plants and trees in the summer, and shoveled snow in the winter. If we had “means” our little town would have sparkled. Everyone did their part in helping each other live lives that needed to be lived. Some, those passing through, said that we were needy. We weren’t! We had life...

It laws about a quarter of a mile off the highway and across the Jocko River Bridge to our lane. One day around the middle of December, a few days before Christmas, I went out in the dark as usual, to do morning chores. There was a skiff of new snow on top of a couple inches of the old. I grained the two saddle horses that I kept up to use for the winter, let my milk cow in the barn, locked her in the station and fed the...
