Soil, like children, needs to be fed. It matters what you give them for their health. The soil needs nutrients. Organic material improves the quality and productivity of the soil. Soil doesn’t like compounds that include pesticides and herbicides or animal fats. They make the soil sick. If your plants seemed to lack vigor this summer, most likely is was due to your soil being infertile. Your soil is resting in the winter. However, you may apply organic (animal) manure in winter unless runoff from your garden could find its w...

CHENEY – In a heartwarming display of community service, Cheney High School students from the Key Club and Honor Society recently came together for their eighth annual "rake away" event. This initiative, which takes place once a year in the first week of November, involves students raking leaves for residents in their neighborhood. The positive impact of their actions on the community is evident from the words of a 78-year-old resident who shared her experience of w...
Bright, vibrant costumes were all over the Eastern Washington University parking lot on Friday, Oct. 27. Kids were able to get candy from various partners that helped provide candy and snacks for the event that was hosted by the college and the Cheney Merchants Association....
In desperation, I took a short cut through the alley, hoping to find shelter from the howling, blowing wind, and the bone chilling cold. The night is very dark and I am in a strange city. I’m afraid that the directions to the Hostel that I was given may only lead to danger. My sneaker clad feet are numb and my gloveless hands ache from the bitter cold. I am exhausted and at this point the only thing I can think of is to slide down in a doorway and give in to my despair. There are no other people around, the shops are c...

From basic decorations to elaborate, eerie displays, his journey into Halloween decor has been nothing short of extraordinary. Grime's Halloween decorating journey began years ago when he decided to take his love for the holiday to the next level. Starting with basic decorations, he...
Keep council consistent I first met Vince Barthels in a public hearing more than 20 years ago and since have become well acquainted with him. We were both environmental scientists and consulting wetland experts. I have a great deal of respect for Vince based on his professionalism, integrity, knowledge base and critical thinking ability. Vince is and has been employed by a leading civil engineering company for nearly 25 years in the Spokane area. Cheney deserves Vince’s continued leadership on the city council because he h...

It was the Big Leaved Maple’s turn to shine. Other trees and shrubs had released their canopies and multicolored leaves littered the landscape. The Maple’s halo of gold reached high into the blue autumn afternoon. The sight was dazzling to behold. Not ready to release its crown, the Maple was admired by creatures great and small. And then as if given a signal, bronzed yellow and gold leaves dropped to the ground, The deep carpet reminiscent of the Yellow Brick Road....

1) Please explain your stance on including Critical Race Theory? CRT is a lens in which to view patterns of systemic racism that honors the experiences of black, indigenous, and people of color and the obstacles they face due to the color of their skin. As a teacher, I was not aware of CRT until I began PhD-level coursework and have never seen it at the K-12 level. The focus should be on Culturally Responsive Teaching instead, which connects students’ cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn in s...
What is your stance on Critical Race Theory This is not a conversation we are having, thus I do not have any comment on this question. 2) Many residents have been wanting to see new schools built, especially in Airway Heights. Elementary schools are moving forward, but there is no solid talk about a middle or high school yet. Do you see a need for secondary schools in Airway? What needs to happen? The Staff and School Board in Cheney Public Schools are very aware of the need for more Schools in our district due to the...
1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. I supported the rezoning from commercial to mixed use/residential prior to the discovery of a massive diesel leak in Minnie Creek. We have a massive housing crisis in our region and less restrictive zoning is a step in the right direction. However, I was and still am a vocal opponent to the redevelopment of the North Cheney Trailer Park. I won’t s...
Please explain your stance on including Critical Race Theory? Critical Race Theory is just that, a theory. There is no explicit instruction of CRT in the curriculum for schools in Washington state. Where it is discussed, it should be alongside all perspectives to ensure a well-rounded student learning experience. It is imperative, however, that these perspectives, while at times uncomfortable for some to hear, be shared and debated openly, and not kept away because it makes us feel poorly. 2) Many residents have been wanting...
1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. While it is good to have Cheney utilizing more Mixed Use zoning as it is part of an overall strong, healthy town, this specific potential development of the land under and around the mobile home park would displace approximately 70 households with no current plan on how to help these residents. This park is the most affordable housing option in...
1) Some residents have concerns about the re-zoning and potential development of the land around the trailer court along 1st St. Do you support this? Please explain why or why not. I did support the re-zone of the approximately 17 acres near Bi-Mart from commercial to a combination of mixed use and multi-family. Prior to the re-zone, the trailer park (a residential use) was a non-conforming use that existed in a commercial zone. The landowner has committed to working with current residents to provide relocation assistance...

CHENEY – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct controlled burns at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge during the fall and winter months. These burns started Friday, Oct. 13. Turnbull officials said burning will start this month and continue through February, weather permitting. The purpose of the fires is to reduce “fuel,” such as downed timber and dry grass and sagebrush, to help alleviate the potential for future wildfires. This will reduce the risk of wildfires on the refuge, and will also contribute to habit...

6 a.m. October 1st, 2023. The early morning autumn light gently filtered through my eyelids, waking me slowly, easing my foggy brain into another day’s existence. A languorous stretch produced the effect I hoped for- a furry headbutt to my shoulder as Tika rolled into my side. This was the magic hour; sleep slowly leaving my head, dawn lifting the veil of dreams and a rather insistent pup vying for my half-awake attention. I love this moment between worlds when nothing is required of me yet, just pet the dog and try to d...
