Oh my, are the kids really back to school already? Now September is flying by. It will soon be Halloween and frost on the pumpkins. Harvest your Jack-o-lantern candidates and winter squash before a hard freeze penetrates the rind. Don’t fret if your tomatoes are still green. After they have lost their shiny green color they will still ripen in the house. They don’t have to be in a sunny place. They just need a little more time. The beets and carrots can stay in the ground longer and will sweeten after a frost. However, har...

Richard Warrington, Owner of Warrington Studios said he has been into art since 1966, when he studied at Eastern Washington University. "The class was all about the instructor's paintings, and I was looking for some discipline," W...
My story comes from the distant past, so I apologize for any mistakes of memory or misrecollection or misinformation that may occur. Any errors are my own. My eldest daughter was always keen to grow up fast. It was not surprise that she eagerly awaited her 16th birthday to get her driver’s license. As soon as she qualified, she and I were headed to the Department of Licensing office, located inconveniently far from our home with hours not compatible to my work schedule. Nor was the organization of the office particularly p...

It was great if you fertilized your lawn before the rain, If not, after mowing, September is still a good time to apply a low release fertilizer before your lawn settles in for winter dormancy. It amazes me to see how resilient my lawn is after heat stress and neglect. Even so, I am considering replacing more of my mower-needy green turf with more eco-friendly varieties. Yes, I know rabbits are fond of clover, but White Dutch Clover is an excellent alternative green ground cover. The leguminous plants fix and supply nitrogen...
Sturdy and voluptuous, this basket once belonged to my Mother. She came under its spell in 1950’s India where she lived with my father and me in a British compound. Perhaps its beauty compensated some for her loneliness. It became a sewing basket full of buttons, thread and thimble, hidden under its domed lid. Years later when my Mother’s estate was diffused, this basket full of tangled thread and remnants was one item I chose to keep. Why does it speak to me so? Whispering its ordinary loveliness and fidelity and hol...
What a privilege it is to have a garden. When I contemplate my good fortune, after the raging wildfires claimed my friends and neighbors homes and gardens, I am reminded how I have taken my home and garden for granted. Reflection is good, rebuilding is hard. Though we can’t take away the anguish of loss we can encourage loved ones and neighbors with support through these times. Joining our community’s efforts to distribute food, clothing and shelter are tangible ways to help. School supplies and messages of heartfelt con...

As to my experiment with permaculture: I had reported that the corn seed I planted in the midst of my weeds was more robust than the ones I planted in rows. Sadly, my theory has been dispelled. Now the corn in rows have overtaken the growth of their wilderness relative. The squash plant is faring well, however, the deer ate the beans that were planted. After a little more research, I learned corn needs to have neighbors, as those luscious ears are pollinated from the tassels of other corn plants by the wind. Those...

My husband and I love going to the movies. We both grew up enjoying a darkened theater, hot buttered popcorn and the thrill of the unknown unfolding before our eyes. We met and married in a small town in southern New Mexico. As adults living in Tiny Town, USA, there wasn’t a whole lot else to do on a sweltering hot weekend. Fortunately back then, the summer time was prime time for new movies to come out. As the years progressed and we moved to the booming metropolis we call Spokane, we still headed to the movies, r...

Permaculture: A New Concept? Why do we make so much work for ourselves in the garden when we can practice permaculture? The history of permaculture dates back to when man, or maybe it was woman, noticed the seeds thrown on the ground from fruits and plants they ate grew new plants and trees. Evolution of gardening employed varied methods. Each more refined than the precious attempt. Gardeners cleared the land, artificially altered seeds and disposed of all plant debris. The ground became sterile and eventually blew away....
A childhood memory that has lived with me forever and I’m sure subconsciously had a part in shaping my life. When I was three years old, our family lived in a rented house on the outskirts of Curlew, Washington. That is a little cattle and logging community up near the Canadian border. Our house sat out from town where it met the open prairie. I can remember a covered front porch and a uard surrounded by a white picket fence. It was open range country. There was a herd of cows and calves that grazed close to our place. A c...
