A miracle of sorts took place under the Capitol dome on April 23. The state Legislature adjourned its 2023 legislative session without raising taxes. I want to point it out because I’m not sure anyone outside Olympia will notice. There have been a dozen major tax increases in the state since the Legislature fell under one-party control in 2018. The biggest ones kicked in this year and are just beginning to bite. We also saw four big new tax proposals. None of them passed this session, but don’t worry – they’ll be back on...

CHENEY – Students at Kappa Sigma fraternity house party Wednesday night report being given an unknown substance in a drinking cup. Nov. 2. The fraternity house at which the event allegedly occurred is in Cheney, not on EWU campus. “That makes it a Cheney police job.” Interim police chief Rick Bechtel said. “Somebody saw a post on TikTok and reported it to the Cheney police and it is now under investigation.” Bechtel said that he then reported the investigation to Chief Jew...
Finally, Republicans have settled on an issue besides inflation, opposing abortion, contraception, fair elections, CRT, and books on gender. That is to attack President Biden. Two recent Letters to the Editor in local newspapers are examples of disparaging Biden. Telephone push polls bashing Biden are common. Representative, Cathy McMorris Rodger, spent much of her Spokane Town Hall smearing Biden. Her recent letter appealing for donations claim Biden has an irrational radical agenda. CMR says she is for equality and other de...

1 Years Ago March 26, 2008 A lack of renovation funding and a failure to reach a maintenance and operations agreement led Eastern Washington University and the Cheney School District to consider closing Reid Elementary, a 50-year-old school. The Cheney library began offering an online tutoring service called Live Homework Help, allowing students and tutors to keep in contact via instant messaging. Cheney sought to formalize its banner policy, setting fees for advertising on local light poles. 20 Years Ago April 1, 1999...

Documents such as Cheney Municipal Court warrants and protection orders, stolen vehicle records, outstanding arrest warrants, missing person...

The city of Medical Lake is requesting residents refrain from using fireworks on the Fourth of July. Medical Lake Fire Chief Jason Mayfield explained that the city is not forcibly banning fireworks but rather asking residents to “voluntarily ban” them. This volunteer ban is a result of the recent drought conditions, hot temperatures and potential threat of wildfires. “We’ve already had lots of fires this year,” Mayfield said. “The prudent thing would be for residents not to set off fireworks.” The City Council voiced similar...
