  • Cheney basketball teams struggle with scoring in losses

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 26, 2014

If the weather outside is cold, it was likely colder inside the gym last week for both Cheney High School basketball teams. The Blackhawks boy’s team shot just 21 percent in a 40-30 loss at home last Tuesday (Dec. 16) to Idaho 4A classification Moscow, and didn’t fare much better two days later on the road in Clarkston, falling 68-32 to the Bantams. The Lady Blackhawks also had difficulties on offense, losing 62-25 to Clarkston in their only game of the week. Visiting Moscow didn’t exactly light up the nets either Tuesd...

The Cheney High boys’ swimming team captured some success on the road after they traveled to Yakima Dec. 16, where they picked up league wins over Grandview (123-38) and Prosser (119-38) and lost to Selah (76-93). The Blackhawks were supposed to face Selah Dec. 13 however the meet was canceled. The Cardinals wrapped NEA wins of 73-62 at Chewelah (Dec. 16) and 67-38 at home over Deer Park (Dec. 19) around an exciting buzzer-beating 3-point basket in a 67-65 nonleague win (Dec. 17) over previously unbeaten 2B Liberty in Spangle. "We have a good early start so far with two road wins and one home win," Medical Lake head coach Arnold Brown said....

  • Eagles play incomplete games in losses to Cal, Sam Houston

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 26, 2014

Eastern Washington played some pretty good basketball over the conclusion of its whirlwind tour across a large part of the U.S. last week. They just didn’t do enough of it as the Eagles fell to Pac-12 California 78-67 Friday, Dec. 19 in Berkley and 76-52 Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Sam Houston State University of the Southland Conference. The Eagles, who fell to 8-4 in their nonconference schedule, played well against 10-1 Cal, a team that is off to its best start in over 50 years. E...

  • Keeping Seahawks' defensive core benefits entire team

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 26, 2014

Seattle Seahawks fans got an early Christmas present this past Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champions took the top spot in the NFC West after a 35-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Although Seattle and Arizona share identical 11-4 records, the Seahawks hold the tiebreaker after having two wins over the Cardinals. They will possibly have home field advantage in the playoffs if they can beat the St. Louis Rams (6-9) in the final game of the regular season. It’s no question that one of Seattle’s driving force is the...

  • What you may not know about 'White Christmas'

    VENUS BRATSVEEN, Contributor|Updated Dec 26, 2014

The Holidays bring to mind favorite traditions, events and activities that bring family and friends together. Some of my happiest memories are those of watching my favorite Holiday movies with my family. My all-time favorite is “White Christmas.” Recently I learned a few new tidbits about this beloved film. Washington native Bing Crosby recorded Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” in 1942. But it wasn’t until 1954 that the best-selling single was turned into a musical featuring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and...

  • Joe McConnell

    Updated Dec 26, 2014

Joe passed away at home Dec. 5, 2014 surrounded by his family. God saw him getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around him, and said, "come with me." With tearful eyes we watched him slowly fade away. Although we loved him dearly we wouldn't make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. Joe was born Nov. 4, 1954 in Spokane Wash., the only son of Delmer and Inez McConn... Full story
