  • Blackhawks fall three points shy of wins over Reardan, Cashmere

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 20, 2013

While Cheney’s pair of losses last week were by a combined total of three points, for first-year head coach Chris Dunn, the frustration is that the games with Reardan and Cashmere ended up in the “L” column in the first place. “We should’ve come out on top with both of them,” Dunn said Monday. The Blackhawks looked sharp in the first quarter Tuesday at Reardan, opening a 14-4 lead after the first eight minutes. But then Cheney began settling for outside jumpers instead of taking the ball to the hoop, enabling Reardan to...

  • Lady Hawks earn first win by downing Reardan

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 20, 2013

The Cheney High girls basketball team finally found the win column, and in the process earned first-year head coach Shannon Root her first varsity victory with a 53-39 win last Tuesday at Reardan. The Lady Hawks started fast against the defending 2B state champion Indians, capitalizing on 10 first quarter turnovers to open a 14-3 lead, expanding it to 23-10 at intermission and never being seriously challenged after that. The win served as a nice salve for the team after suffering a pair of season-opening losses, including a...

  • Gray is fifth

    Updated Dec 20, 2013

Cheney’s Ryan Gray scored a first and second place in the 10-day run of the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas that concluded last Saturday, but it was the six times he failed to win money that killed his chances at a world bareback championship. With a win in Round 9 worth $18,629.81, plus the $14,723.56 payday for a runner-up in Round 2, Gray finished with season earnings of $155,763 and a fifth place in the final world standings....

  • Eastern falls again to UC Irvine, Ndiaye's presence

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Dec 20, 2013

His stat line isn’t overwhelming, but the imposing presence of 7-foot-6 Mamadou Ndiaye and his team’s defense certainly is. For the second time this season, UC Irvine held Eastern Washington University to 33 percent shooting or less and went on to hand EWU its first home loss in four tries this season by a 70-61 score last Sunday, Dec. 15 in a non-conference men’s basketball game at Reese Court. Ndiaye made all five of his shots and finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and blocked four shots, but also altered several other...

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Dec 20, 2013

Senior Aubrey Ashenfelter drained a jumper with two seconds left to lift the Eastern Washington women's basketball team over visiting University of Idaho, 85-84, last Saturday at Reese Court. After freshman Jade Redmon grabbed an offensive rebound with 12 ticks remaining, Ashenfelter got the ball reversed to her, driving into the lane from the left wing. Her jump stop sent the Vandals' defender flying, then she calmly drained a jumper from the Big Sky logo below the free...

  • Walk-on Bob Picard helped pave the NFL road at Eastern

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 20, 2013

Long before the Brandon Kaufman's, Greg Herd's, Nicholas Edwards – and now, Cooper Kupp – were making headlines and baffling defenders catching footballs at Eastern Washington, there was Bob Picard. Over 40 years ago now, it was Picard who set the table for a legion of Eastern Eagles to move on from that little school in Cheney into professional football. He's one of just two players in over 105 years of Eastern football to have their number – his being 84 – retired and was...
