  • Alcobendas wins national award for college kickers

    Updated Dec 13, 2018

A national player of the year award was probably the furthest thing from the mind of Roldan Alcobendas when he was laying on a high school soccer field in the spring of 2013 and on the turf at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman, Mont., a year-and-a-half later. But after two knee surgeries and more rehabilitation work than most people can endure, the sixth-year senior has been recognized for his perseverance and accuracy as the 2018 recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award. The...

  • Cards even record on eve of league play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

Medical Lake’s boys basketball team plans to hang its success this season on the ability to use speed to counter size. But as they split their final nonleague games last week, conditioning and depth might be another foe that third-year head coach Noel Nachtel needs to take into consideration. Medical Lake (2-2) went on the road where they faced a pair of 2B schools, handily defeating Davenport 82-46 on Dec. 4, but losing 73-50 to St. George’s, Dec. 6. “St. Georges, in my opini...

  • Medical Lake prepped for defense of NEA titles

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

It took until March 2 last season for the Medical Lake girls to suffer their first defeat. But after just the second week of the 2018-19 season, that is no longer an issue after the Cardinals split a pair of non-conference basketball games against 2B teams. In a pair of road games prior to the start of play this week in the Northeast A League, Medical Lake defeated Davenport 72-58 Dec. 4 before losing to St. George’s 45-30 on Dec. 6. “They were a good team and outplayed us,...

  • Cheney gymnastics battles eligibility, takes fifth at first meet

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

The Cheney High School gymnastics team snagged the fifth-place spot in their meet at Shadle Park High School on Dec. 6, showing potential despite much of the team being ineligible to compete due to a lack of practices thus far this season. “Only a few newbies competed and we didn’t quite have enough for a varsity line-up, so we had to take two zeros in vault and bars,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. For young gymnasts to compete at the high school level, they must attend at least 15 practices, instead of the 10 required by mo...

  • Cheney High girls drop three in basketball action

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 13, 2018

A thin bench and some hot shooting led to a trio of losses last week for the Cheney High School girls basketball team. The Lady Blackhawks suffered their first loss of the season at Post Falls Dec. 4, 69-49, and followed that with two setbacks at home, 56-50 to Freeman on Wednesday, Dec. 5 and 77-54 to Clarkston on Friday, Dec. 7. By JOHN McCALLUM Managing Editor Cheney High School boys basketball head coach Gregg Smith believes his team learned how to win close games last season thanks to its relatively deep playoff run. That experience may have manifested itself for the first time this year last Friday night as the Blackhawks withstood a late charge by the visiting Clarkston Bantams to preserve a 60-53 Great Northern League win. “That pays off with confidence,” Smith said of last year’s experience. Th...

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 13, 2018

The city of Airway Heights has not yet reached a wage agreement with its Public Safety Guild, and it looks like that discussion could stretch into 2019. At the City Council’s Dec. 3 meeting, members heard the first reading of an ordinance to set the 2019 salaries for city employees. Local 270A workers and non-represented employees other than the city manager and department heads all received a 3 percent wage increase effective the first of the year. However, an agreement with the Public Safety Guild, which works with f...
