  • Gun advocate files recall of state Attorney General Ferguson

    Roger Harnack, Publisher|Updated Dec 18, 2019

OLYMPIA — Despite the overwhelming objection of new gun control laws across most of Eastern Washington, State Attorney General Robert “Bob” Ferguson is pushing for more. As a result, Ferguson is now the subject of both impeachment and recall efforts statewide. Gov. Jay Inslee is also the subject of a request for impeachment. On Dec. 16, Matt Marshall of Eatonville filed a recall petition for Ferguson with the Secretary of State's Office. To get the recall on the ballot, Marshall has to collect signatures from appro... Full story

Medical Lake took an initial 15-9 lead in the first quarter until the Gorillas settled down and w...

  • Blackhawks boys start basketball season 0-2

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 12, 2019

CHENEY – The Frankie Keplinger era has started at Cheney High School boys’ basketball, with the Blackhawks still searching for that first win of the 2019-2020 season. Cheney came close to securing that in their first two games last week — both on the road — but couldn’t complete the deal. The Blackhawks played a Shadle Park team that advanced in the 3A tournament last year pretty close for three quarters only to fall 55-48 in the season opener Dec. 4. Against Northeast A League power Freeman two nights later, the Blackhawk...

  • Medical Lake wrestlers grapple with new season on the mat

    Lee Hughes, Staff reporter|Updated Dec 12, 2019

MEDICAL LAKE — The Medical Lake wrestling crew had plenty of mat moves to make last week as they took both a win and a loss at a double dual and took third at the Davenport Invitational tournament in their first matches of the new season. Double Dual On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Cardinals traveled to Idaho where they went 1 ¬– 1 at Lake City High in Coeur d’Alene, first topping West Valley 63-12. But then Lake City got their paws on them and took the Cardinals out in a 51-18...

  • Blackhawk wrestlers warm up for another season

    Lee Hughes, Staff reporter|Updated Dec 12, 2019

CHENEY —Blackhawk grapplers worked the kinks out in their first two non-league events of the season, first in a 58-15 dual beat-down against Deer Park, followed by a fifth place showing at the Deer Park Invitational the next day. Cheney at Deer Park “We were missing some varsity wrestlers from the lineup,” head coach Jason Connor said via email about the dual. “Deer Park was also missing some wrestlers from their run in the football playoffs so it’s hard to judge how good...

  • It's time to go bowling, again

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Dec 12, 2019

It’s done. The college football post season has been finalized and is fast descending upon us like water poured from a 50-gallon barrel three feet above our heads. Not counting the national championship game Jan. 13, there are 41 bowl games this year, which seems about par for the course. That means 82 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams reached post-season play. That’s 82 out of 130 teams in FBS, so not quite 64 percent of schools. Not everybody can have what most would consider a “winning” record with that many teams,...

Cheney opened with a come-from-behind 58-47 win at Greater Spokane League 3A opponent Shadle Park on Dec. 4, but followed that with a 51-40 loss at Northeast A League power Freeman on Dec. 6. For first-year head coach Roxie Smith, it was the game Friday with the Scotties that was the better contest. “We played better,” she said. “We had better intensity.” The Lady Blackhawks led 21-19 at the half at Freema...

  • Thankful for Cheney's fluoridated water supply

    Updated Dec 12, 2019

In Spokane County, we have some of the best water around. As a community dentist, I had the opportunity to tour the Cheney water facility, located just three blocks from where I have served people at the CHAS dental clinic. What gracious hosts. It was fascinating to see the pumps, pipes and meters that keep our water healthy. It was clear to me the staff of the water system serve the community with pride and care every day. Because Cheney has fluoridated water, I could also tell them honestly they probably do more to protect...

  • Disappointed vote for 976 didn't change anything

    Updated Dec 12, 2019

How many years has Eastern Washington and Spokane county been paying higher license tab prices while the North South freeway has gone nowhere near being completed. Thankfully Eastern Washington is a dryer climate otherwise it would be buried in moss, mushrooms and ferns to be discovered hundreds of years from now by archaeologists speculating what is was meant to be. It is my understanding that Washington state ranks third in the nation in paying the highest gas taxes, fourth in the nation for combined state and sales taxes...

  • Take the time to contact your representatives

    Updated Dec 12, 2019

In times like these I think it is important for people to know how to contact their representatives and senators. Everyone has two state senators, and one district representative. One of the easiest ways to do this is use an advocacy group that is aligned with your beliefs. I believe that we can end global poverty, so I send emails through Borgenproject.org. A good advocacy group will have direct links to bills and legislature that they are lobbying for and most have prewritten emails that can be sent easily to your leaders....
