  • Jacksonville State hangs their hat on defense

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 12, 2013

Last week's Eastern opponent, South Dakota State was known for its running game, specifically FCS rushing leader Zach Zenner and the Eagles shut him down. Now, in their quarterfinal matchup against Alabama's Jacksonville State it's the Gamecock's defense that will stand in the way of EWU getting a step closer to their second national championship. Jacksonville State ventures to the Northwest following their 31-10 win over McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. Saturday night. Whil...

  • Cheney girls still seeking first victory for new coach

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 12, 2013

The Cheney High girls basketball team finished the first week of play shy one thing – its first win. The Lady Hawks dropped a pair of opening games last week, losing 42-32 on the road against Idaho 4A Lakeland Tuesday and then 56-16 to Ellensburg Saturday in the home opener. Tuesday in Rathdrum against the Hawks, Cheney played well in the first half en route to a 23-13 halftime lead. In the second half the Lady Hawks went cold from the field, scoring just nine points and getting outscored 17-5 in the fourth quarter, and losin...

  • Blackhawks earn split in first week of cage action

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 12, 2013

New Cheney High School boys basketball head coach Chris Dunn learned a lot about his team in their opening games last week, but one quality in particular stood out. That is the quality of resiliency. Dunn said the Blackhawks kept playing hard and with enthusiasm despite getting blown out in the fourth quarter of a 60-38 loss at Idaho 4A school Lakeland Tuesday night. That hard work and energy carried over to Saturday’s non-league home opener with Ellensburg as the Blackhawks rallied in the fourth to down the Bulldogs 6...

  • Bowl payout numbers are eye-popping

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 12, 2013

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor If it’s December it must again be time for one of my favorite topics – the NCAA bowl payouts. Not that the NCAA is doing any paying out. They’re doing the reaping, and not so grimly. Between Dec. 21 and Jan. 6 there will be 35 games distributing over $148.6 million, at least as far as my calculator could calculate, to 70 teams and their respective conferences. Actually the money goes to the conferences first, and is then divied out, so everybody benefits in some way. I’ve written about the impacts of b...

Then they beat the clock – and Portland State – to maintain a rare undefeated finish in Big Sky play to win a conference championship. Last Saturday the Eastern Washington University Eagles took on both Mother Nature's chill and Zach Zenner, one of the best running backs in the Football Championship Subdivision and came out victorious, 41-17 over South Dakota State in a second-round playoff game at...
