    The Cheney High volleyball team captured the 2016 District 7 championship after a 3-2 win over Pullman, Oct. 29. Although the Blackhawks had a bye to the finals, they took on a battle-tested Pullman team in a close match (17-25, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10). Rylie Pease led her team with 17 kills, Peyton Stark had 37 assists and Taylor Gould recorded four aces. On defense, Ally Jones had 17 digs and KD Skillingstad notched a season-best five blocks.     Big Sky soccer tournament moves to Eastern Turns out there was some good soccer news last Friday for Eastern Washington. Prior to their 3-2 overtime loss to Montana at the EWU soccer field, the Big Sky Conference announced that the 2016 Big Sky soccer championships would be played at Eastern.     Dick passed away peacefully in his sleep in Spokane, Wash. on Oct. 23, 2016 at 70 years old. Dick was born in Spokane on Dec. 2, 1945 to Francis and Margaret Lee. After proudly serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War, he went to work in the family business, Bill’s Tavern in Cheney. He ran Bill’s until he retired in 2006.   • Medical Lake ROTC assists at cemetery work day

    Saturday, Sept. 24, was a volunteer work day at the historic Medical Lake Cemetery on Brooks Road. In addition to many Medical Lake Cemetery Association members, the Medical Lake High School Junior ROTC had 18 junior cadets help as well. The project included raking, mowing, weeding, tree pruning and garbage clean up. The cemetery receives no assistance from city or Spokane County services so the upkeep is strictly up to volunteers.
