  • Hatch memorial service reflects role models

Sport in America sometimes comes under attack for being given too high a priority in society. Yes, today's professional athletes' multi-million dollar salaries are unjustly higher than what our teachers earn, and the never-ending stories about their transgressions do receive undue attention in the media. It is an unfortunate consequence of this negative image, when local school sports then attract critics who cut them first when educational funding is tight. It takes events like last Saturday's memorial service for Jim Hatch...

  • Military service should not equal residency

Recently, the Spokesman-Review published the entire Constitution on two full pages. I read the entire thing, and not for the first time. It was obvious that the entire document was written, illuminating the “rights” of mankind and the rights of the common citizens. Nowhere does it refer to the “rights” of illegal aliens. Since when does someone who enters this country illegally have rights? Citizenship of the republic is an earned right to many of us. Those who are native born are automatically citizens, but those who are...

  • Constructive options to profane language

You know, profanity isn't what it used to be anymore. By that I don't mean its substance – swear words have always been, well, profane. Pretty much the standard, not too much new added, unless you count combinations. What I mean is that profanity is everywhere these days. Not just rap music, but movies, books, and particularly television, four-letter words are being used all to frequently in our language, so much so they have become the nouns and verbs of choice, not to mention adjectives and adverbs. This has been going o...

  • Are teens drinking it up more than before?

Recent events have people suspecting teenage drinking is on the rise in Cheney. Statistics in the Cheney Police Department October Monthly Accountability Review report indicate criminal alcohol offenses are up as much as 25 percent over this time in 2006, depending on which chart you use. Last month there were 26 arrests for alcohol offenses, and verbiage in the report states increases for minor in possession citations are “up significantly.” We know 14 of those October arrests come from one incident involving Cheney Hig...

  • HomeWorks implements socialization into homeschooling

By DAVID TELLER Staff Reporter Socialization is a critical element of education, and for children schooled at home, not only is it even more crucial, it is a weekly break from the drudgery of schoolwork. Students in the HomeWorks program in the Cheney School District take a fieldtrip every Friday. Shannon Lawson, the HomeWorks director, said some of the field trips are educational and have a lesson to be learned. Others are just for fun or are creative. Lawson said the functions aren't paid for by the school district. The...

  • ML High School choir students performing a little ‘Nunsense'

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter When a group of Medical Lake High School choir and drama students got together for a slumber party following the closing of last year's final production, they hadn't planned to come away cast as leads in the following year's next big play “Nunsense,” a musical comedy opening on Nov. 29. Perhaps it was destined to happen when MLHS teacher Ginny Luhn played a DVD of the successful off-Broadway play during the party, and the girls immediately beg... Full story

  • National Diabetes Month helps bring focus to healthy, educated agenda

By CRAIG HOWARD Contributing Writer/Spokane Valey News Herald November may be National Diabetes Month, but for Grant Wasson, the disease is a year-round concern. Before he was diagnosed in 1995, Wasson didn't think much about diabetes, despite a family history of the condition. He was 51 when doctors told him that his blood sugar level was high enough to place him as a Type 2 diabetic. “I was heavy then,” said Wasson, now 63. “I was eating doughnuts and candy and it seemed like I was tired all the time.” About 90 percent...

  • Medical Lake's new ordinance proposes limiting summer irrigation

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter A first violation gets a citizen a written warning. The second offense is a civil infraction with a fine of up to $250. The third offense counts as a misdemeanor, and could mean up to 90 days in jail, or a $1,000 fine. That's the order of penalties as determined by Medical Lake City Council members on Nov. 6 as part of a new city ordinance codifying previously voluntary water conservation measures. Council approved a first reading of Ordinance 981 that places restrictions on residential...

By DAVID TELLER Staff Reporter Police work has changed. With all of the advances in technology and communications, police officers know exactly what's going on, but only if it gets reported. Beginning the first of the year, Lt. Dave Mather of the Cheney Police Department is heading up a community policing program where the department will begin taking a proactive approach to connecting with Cheney residents and establishing a personal line of communication. “We're only as effective as the trust that the community has in t...
