By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter What's that old saying about slow and steady winning the race? Despite rocketing ahead early after taking the opening tip-off, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team lost a non-conference game 70-59 to Washington State University last Sunday afternoon at Reese Court. Both teams spent the afternoon trading big volleys of points, but in the end WSU had the final say and run to pull away from the Eagles. Eastern jumped out to a commanding 13-0 lead with less than 5-minutes gone...
What's that place south of here that calls itself “Quarterback U?” Well they might just want to step away from that distinction. Eastern Washington University is fast becoming a Mecca of outstanding, award-winning quarterbacks. For the fourth time in the last six years, an Eastern signal caller has been selected as the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year as sophomore Matt Nichols earned that honor when the All-Big Sky Conference team was announced this past Monday. Erik Meyer, the player Nichols replaced, was the...
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter One common thread weaves its way through Jeremy Affeldt. Always have a dream, no matter how big it might be. And Affeldt knows all about dreams, whether it's having them, or living them. Affeldt recently took time to speak to high school students across the area – and specifically in Medical Lake where he did a lot of his growing up – encouraging them to always dream big. Affeldt's not just someone blowing smoke. He throws heat as a big lea...
Junior guard Adris DeLeon provided a much-needed scoring punch with 22 points, but it proved too little, too late as the Washington Huskies (3-0) used a big first half to take an 82-68 non-conference men's basketball victory over Eastern Washington (1-2) last Sunday at Bank of America Arena in Seattle. DeLeon scored 16 second-half points to pull the Eagles to within 15 in the second half. That and 10-straight EWU points by Gary Gibson helped pull the Eagles to within 14 points, but Jon Brockman hit a pair of huge baskets...
The following story appeared in the Nov. 26, 1987 issue of the Cheney Free Press. We have recreated it here word for word. What an incredible weekend of volleyball it was. Taking on all comers, exhibiting the kind of never-say-die determination that separates true champions from the would-be challengers, and somehow managing to remain razor sharp throughout a grueling five-match day, the Cheney Blackhawks find themselves at the pinnacle. State Champs. Number One. The Blackhawk...

By LaVERLE McCANDELSS Contributor One of the best known succulents is the “ALOE VERA,” which is also known as the “medicinal plant” most often used for burns. Many of the lotions and other cosmetics list aloe vera as an ingredient. Since I “mess around the kitchen range” a lot, we have an aloe plant close by. Get a burn, rinse the burn in cold water and break off a leaf of aloe, squeeze out the sticky juice and put it on the burn. This is for MINOR BURNS, not major burns...
By LUELLA DOW Contributor A few years ago there was an article in another paper about a Santa Claus and a crying baby. The little boy was about 19 months old. He was hot and tired in his snowsuit as his mother insisted they wait in line for a picture with Santa. Santa, himself, was probably hot and tired after hefting a hundred children onto his lap to have them pull his beard, pinch his knees, kick his chins and tell him, “You're sure fat.” When the mother and her screaming child finally arrived at Santa's knee, Santa, who...
