Eagles prep for basketball season opener after exhibition win over UPS Five players scored in double figures – including one player Eagle fans probably won’t see this season – as the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team defeated Puget Sound 89-55 Nov. 9 in an exhibition game at Reese Court. Guard Cody Benzel, who is expected to redshirt this season, hit his first five three-point attempts and finished with 15 points for the Eagles. He is a freshman out of Spokane’s Ferris High School. Eastern outscored the NCAA...

  • Cardinals find building blocks in soccer season

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2014

The start and the finish were encouraging. And believe it or not, even the middle, 14 consecutive losses, offered something of a positive. That’s pretty much how Medical Lake girls’ soccer head coach Zane Higgins summed up a year where his team struggled, but grew at the same time. The Cardinals opened the season with a 3-2 loss at home to 2B school, St. Georges, and closed with a 2-1 win over the Dragons on the road. The good part out of the loss was it took just one gam...

  • Week 9 win goes to Riggers

    Updated Nov 14, 2014

It was a wild Week 9 in the Cheney Free Press football contest where it took a tiebreaker to separate the top three finishers. Spokane’s Jim Riggers had four losses and earns a $50 merchant’s gift certificate for his work. Medical Lake’s Jay Lemaster also missed four games, winning a $20 Owl Drug gift certificate, also in a tiebreaker over David Helsing. Of all entries, just one picked WSU’s upset over Oregon State. Winners must come to the Free Press office at 1616 W. First St. in Cheney to pick up their prizes. Be sure to...

  • Cheney freshman wins title at state cross country

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 14, 2014

Cheney High athlete Isaiah Rigo now has a unique opportunity — thanks to what he did last Saturday at the state cross country championships in Pasco. Rigo blitzed a pair of opponents to capture a state championship in the wheelchair division, completing the 2-mile course at Sun Willows Golf Course in a time of 7 minutes, 52.9 seconds, almost 25 seconds ahead of 3A Mount Spokane’s Michael Hoyt. As a freshman, Rigo’s win gives him the opportunity to potentially become a rarity in Washington sports — a four-time champio...

  • Blackhawks end season shelling GSL's Rogers

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 14, 2014

For Cheney High School football players, coaches and fans, last Thursday's shellacking of visiting Rogers High School in the season-finale was a great way to send out a talented group of seniors, and provide a positive off-season feeling for the Blackhawks possibilities in 2015. Senior running back Austin Kline ended his Cheney career by rushing for 180 yards on 19 carries, scoring three touchdowns while junior running back Ty Graham scored twice and junior quarterback Josh...

  • It's great to see older athletes continuing to compete at high level

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2014

Age is a funny thing when it comes to sports. Take former light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, who is still competing at 49 years old. Hopkins lost his fight against undefeated Russian fighter Sergey “The Crusher” Kovalev, Saturday, Nov. 8, in their light heavyweight unification title in Atlantic City, N.J. Kovalev dropped Hopkins in the first round and from there went on to win a one-sided fight in front of a crowd of 8,545 at Boardwalk Hall, a place where Hopkins had some of his best triumphs in his career, inc...

  • Eastern holds off Montana for 36-26 Roos Field win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2014

In the moments following Eastern Washington's enormously important 36-26 Big Sky Conference football victory over the Montana Grizzlies, Eagles' quarterback Vernon Adams once again found himself the center of attention. Returning to action after four weeks on the sidelines as his broken foot healed, Adams deflected the suggestion that "Big Play V.A." had a new nickname: "Griz killer." "Naw," Adams said. It's all about his team's preparation during the week. But statistics just...
