So much for all the "experts" who throw darts at the target in July and try to predict how things will look like in November in the Big Sky Conference football standings. Between the coaches and media, both picked defending co-champions, Eastern Washington and North Dakota, to finish one-two. Fast-forward five months and reality has set in. While Eastern barely hangs in the race, reeling from two consecutive conference losses and playing for their postseason lives, North...

Even though football season is over for many high schools, there is one last game that is still going to be played in Cheney. The Powder Puff football game, which is a fundraiser for Cheney High School’s senior all-nighter, will be played under the lights of Tom Oswald Field on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This is not the typical football game as the competition will be flag football with 11th grade girls versus 12th grade girls. Since boys are not the ones playing, they will be on the sideline as cheerleaders in...
The soccer season for Medical Lake and the stellar, record-setting career of forward Makayla Geiger came to an end Nov. 2 when Freeman scored a 2-0 win in the cold rain at Spokane Falls Community College. The Scotties got goals 12 minutes apart, the first and eventual game winner from Claire Love in the fourth minute and another from Kylie Nelson in the 16th minute to move on to the state tournament. We just got scored on early and it put us in a hole," head coach Zane...

The Eastern Washington University soccer team has been making history throughout their whole season. But the Eagles just topped it off with a Big Sky Championship title for the second year in a row proving that EWU is fortunate to have successful sports even outside of football. I have been covering the team from the Sports Information Department at EWU and it has been an exciting experience to be part of such a successful team and to see their hard work pay off. I think that head coach Chad Bodnar has turned around the...
It took a while, well into the second half, but Eastern Washington finally broke the ice - literally to some extent - to score late goals for a 3-0 win over the University of Northern Colorado to claim the 2017 Big Sky Conference soccer championship for a second consecutive year. Played in a constant snowstorm, the Eagles ended a scoreless drought, getting goals from a pair of penalty kicks in the 62nd and 75th minutes from Savannah Hoekstra and Chloe Williams. Alexis...
It is a good thing Medical Lake's boy's cross country team runs better than they cut hair. One of the Cardinals rewards for winning a third 1A state championship, which they did in dominant fashion Nov. 4 in Pasco, was to be able to apply the shears to head coach Gene Blankenship's lengthy mane of salt and pepper locks. And to add a welcome injury to Blankenship's pride came the kids' desire to make the veteran coach have hair that resembled that of the current president of...
