  • Uncertain future for Fisher

    BECKY THOMAS, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 9, 2012

Backstage at the Fisher Building theater, there’s a cabinet full of old scripts and high school drama yearbooks full of photos, quotes and Cheney High School theater legends. The meanings behind the eyeball and the spoone, the quotes, the inside jokes and the traditions have been passed down from year to year, generation to generation since the first performance on the stage in 1930. Back then it was a brand new high school. Today, leaders say the building is becoming u...

  • Blackhawks overcome miscues, down Clarkston 28-19 in finale

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 9, 2012

Normally, teams committing five turnovers and over 100 yards in penalties don’t find themselves in the win column when the game is over. But the Cheney football team isn’t normal. The Blackhawks overcame these obstacles with a three-touchdown performance from quarterback Andrew Graham and a defense that created opportunities by intercepting Clarkston quarterback Austin Hansen five times for a 28-19 win in Clarkston. Cheney’s win combined with East Valley’s 35-24 victory over D...

  • Kodiaks cruise past Cardinals in playoff opener, 44-14

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

Medical Lake’s first playoff run in a decade came to a soggy finish last Friday night in Leavenworth where the Cascade Kodiaks rolled to a 44-14 victory in the opening round of state 1A play. Hampered by poor footing on the field after days of rain, plus penalties that baffled the coaching staff, the Cardinals saw the game quickly get out of hand as the No. 2 team in the Caribou Trail League scored 28 second quarter points to advance to a second round game with Royal. After s...

  • Predictions come true for Medical Lake cross country at state

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

Going into last Saturday’s State cross country championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, Medical Lake’s head coach Gene Blankenship made a prediction. Blankenship thought a finish anywhere from third to sixth for the boys was not out of the question, while the girls could place from sixth to ninth in team competition. “Pretty close, huh,” Blankenship said with a laugh after the Cardinal boys finished third and the girls eighth on the 5,000 meter course. The ML boys, w...

  • Some veterans who served were more than just your rank and file athletes

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 8, 2012

With Veterans Day taking place this Sunday, Nov. 11, I thought it appropriate to stop and remember some of the athletes who have served, given their lives, in defense of their country in times of war and peace. We know the recent story of Pat Tillman, the Arizona Cardinals’ safety who volunteered after the attacks of Sept. 11, serving in Afghanistan where he was killed by friendly fire in 2004. There are eight others whose services are told in a 2010 story on TotalSports.com. Some of you who have been around a bit longer t...

  • Eastern recovers just fine in 34-17 win over Cal Poly

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

If there was any fear the taste of Eastern Washington University’s first Big Sky Conference football loss might linger and sour their effort in last Saturday’s non-conference game with Cal Poly, it was quickly washed away. A 7-play, 81-yard drive on the game’s first possession, capped by Demitrius Bronson’s 1-yard run with just 2 minutes, 30 seconds gone in the first quarter started the Eagles on the way to a 34-17 win over the previously No. 16 Mustangs before 8,444 fans at...

He said it was a great background for the field of dentistry, for which he received a degree at the University of Washington. • Building on success

    Updated Nov 8, 2012

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter West Plains potter Adam Scoggin has a theory about why people like to tour artists’ studios. Regular folks with little art experience will ask detailed questions about the process of creating a work of art, but why? Scoggin says it’s simple curiosity. “People love an opportunity to see where art is made, to see artists at work. They just love it,” he said. “They know that there’s tools and processes involved that are a mystery to them and they wa...

  • Care and Share store will benefit from renovation

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

Big changes are in store for Medical Lake’s Care and Share Thrift Store. Since mid-October, the store has been under the knife, receiving some tender loving care in the form of renovations. Additional space has allowed the store the opportunity to spread out and create proper departments for its items with a brand new floor plan. Generous donations from Medical Lake residents totaling between $10,000 and $15,000 helped jump-start the much-needed project. Care and Share director Ann Starr said the community has been a s...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

The Airway Heights City Council heard the results of its housing study from earlier this year, relating to the Fairchild Preservation and Community Empowerment Project. Those results show that a large percentage of residents living in APZ Two would be interested in moving, if a competitive alternative housing location was offered. Chris Venne from Community Frameworks in Spokane revealed the results at the Monday, Nov. 5 Airway Heights City Council meeting. The eventual goal of the project is to have residents voluntarily...

Cheney-area resident Republican Jeff Holy was in command of winning the Position 2 seat upon release of initial election results Tuesday evening, holding a 54-45 percent lead over Democrat Dennis Dellwo. It’s Holy’s second run for elected office, losing in the primaries of the 2010 race for District 3 Spokane County Co...

    BECKY THOMAS, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 8, 2012

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter On a night when most of the nation was focused on government on a larger scale, the Cheney City Council gathered with city department leaders to discuss governance on the local level, specifically the city’s 2013 budget. The budget workshop, held at the city’s Utility Building Tuesday night, covered broad goals and specific changes coming in 2013. The city faces challenges, including possible rate increases from electricity and solid waste disposal providers, but leaders said at the meeting tha...
