  • Gardening by Osmosis

    Margaret A. Swenson|Updated Nov 3, 2022

Just before the ‘Big Weather Change’ several weeks ago, I brought my green tomatoes in the house. They have been ripening nicely in their cardboard boxes. I am concerned though, that my grandchildren think red tomatoes grow in boxes on the kitchen floor. I am hoping there will be a few red ones left for Thanksgiving and maybe even some green ones for ‘Green Tomato Pie’. I haven’t seen a recipe for this but with the price of apples I’m thinking, why not? Stacks of firewood and full barrels of oil grace our homes on these co...

You are running against Eric Dooyema as District Court Judge; what is an issue that you and he differ on concerning this position? “I am running for this community. And that is something that sets us apart. I have been a litigator, an advocate for crime victims, a supervisor, and a liaison with law enforcement. I have spent countless hours in and out of the courtroom applying my skills. Honestly, until I declared my intent to run for this position, I did not know my opponent, and as this campaign draws to a close, I still d...

You are running against Jenny Zappone as District Court Judge; what is an issue that you and she differ on concerning this position? I don’t really know my opponent’s position on any issues. As a judicial officer, and as a judicial candidate, I’m bound by judicial canons that prevent me from publicly speaking on any issue that might come before me. Judicial campaigns are non-partisan. Practically, publicly speaking about issues would undermine the neutrality and integrity of the court. Where we differ significantly, is what...

“The thing which distinguishes me the most is the level of experience I have. The year I spent as Assistant U.S. Attorney, and several terms elected to the Airway Heights city council prior to this election. I’m a retired Air Force officer as well. All this experience and more. My opponent was a pastor for 25 years. Also, I have been managing the largest law firm in eastern Washington, and it takes an experienced leader to get the best out of what we have. “Her philosophy is that we file too many cases in general. We only...

You are running against Andrew Biviano as District Court Judge; what is an issue that you and he differ on concerning this position? I only know of my opponent’s partisan political background. I’m not running for political reasons, but because my experience in this court makes me the best person for the job and I want to give back to my community. I have served in District Court as a pro tem judge for the last 3 ½ years presiding over civil and criminal matters. I’m the Court Commissioner for Airway Heights. I’m a pro tem...

You are running against Deanna Crull as District Court Judge; what is an issue that you and she differ on concerning this position? Both candidates in this race are rated exceptionally well qualified, as we both have ample legal and judicial experience. What sets me apart from Ms. Crull—and most judges—is my unique combination of legal and nonlegal experience. I have a degree in clinical psychology and worked as a case manager for more than five years with people with severe mental illness and behavioral disorders. My leg...
