On paper this fall, Montana State’s football team appears to be still on the swoon that cost head coach Rob Ashe his job last December. But Eastern Washington head football coach Beau Baldwin knows there’s still bite in the Bobcats, who battle his Football Championship Subdivision third-ranked Eagles at 11:10 a.m. from Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman. The game can be seen regionally on ROOT Sports Northwest and heard on 700 ESPN radio. Sitting at 0-4 in Big Sky Conference play, 2-5...
EWU’s Dula advances in ITA tennis Eastern Washington University’s men’s tennis team made history this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships in Berkeley, Calif., Oct. 13-15. Senior Robert Dula entered the bracket ranked 17th and advanced to the fourth round, which had 16 players from a 128 draw, making him the first Eagle to ever advance that far in the tournament. This comes on the heels of advancing the first time in history for any Eagle to go to the finals of the 256 pre-q...
If the Medical Lake Cardinals were being graded and ranked according to effort on the football field they just might be among the best in their league. But the reality is, that’s just one element of the game, and following last Friday’s 42-0 loss to Northeast A League-leading Deer Park, the Cards are winless in seven games, and have failed to score in five consecutive outings. “This was one of our best efforts as a team,” head coach Mo Owen said. “(But) we were overmatched.” T...
The losing streak reached 12 matches for the MedicalLake High School volleyball team with a pair of 3-0 losses last week to Colville and Deer Park. “Tuesday started out rough and I thought we were in for a long night,” Cardinals’ head coach Todd Harr said of the 25-5 opening set loss to Colville. “The night turned around and we battled the rest of the night,” falling 25-21 and 25-17. Harr singled out the play of Kristina Michener who led her team with six digs and a pair of b...
For a second consecutive week, Medical Lake lost a Northeast A League soccer game in a shootout. But this one, a 3-2 loss at Deer Park on Oct. 13 carried a bit more weight than did their setback by the same score on Oct. 6 at Riverside. In a contest that gave the winner sole possession of first place in the NEA, Deer Park (8-2 NEA, 10-3 overall) got a shootout goal from Lily Pierce to decide it. Medical Lake (8-3, 9-5) will have to play a wait and see game to find where they...
Medical Lake head cross country coach Gene Blankenship hopes the league schedule he helped craft does not come back to bite him and his teams. The showdown for the Northeast A League boys’ regular season title between a pair of undefeated teams — Medical Lake and Deer Park, both 5-0 — which occurred this past Tuesday, Oct. 18, comes on the heels of two dominating, but easy league wins for the Cardinals. “Unfortunately we’ve had two easy league meets in a row, now we have to g...
The Medical Lake boys, led by the second-place finish from Mason Williams, placed four runners among the top seven finishers and earned just enough points to upset the state’s top-ranked 1A team, Deer Park, 26-28 in the final Northeast A League cross country meet Oct. 18 in Colville. The win earns the No. 6-ranked Cardinals the regular-season NEA title....

Cheney High swimmers got an opportunity to try some new events at an invitational meet last Saturday at Eastern Washington University’s pool. No scores were available at press time from the Blackhawks’ girls meet with fellow Eastern Washington rivals Pullman and Clarkston, along with Auburn and Auburn-Riverside high school teams from Western Washington. Cheney head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said her team results were “all over the place.” The Blackhawks captured first place in four of the 11 events, and took second in another...
Even though the outcome last Wednesday at West Valley may not have been quite to his liking, Cheney High cross country co-coach Derek Slaughter still thinks the 2016 season has set up well for Blackhawk success this Saturday at the District 7 meet in Clarkston. The Cheney boys ran their Great Northern League record to 3-1 by edging a determined Eagles squad, 26-29, while the girls fell victim to a record day by three West Valley freshmen and one sophomore who ran like they had never run before, downing Cheney 24-31. “All f...
It appears that anyone can call themselves a professional mixed martial arts fighter. Last week, former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy announced that he would trade in his cleats and shoulder pads and embark on an MMA career. In a statement to MMA Fighting.com, Hardy said he has been training for several months and there are already promoters who are interested in signing him. Hardy’s first professional fight is scheduled for 2017. Hardy, a second-team All American from the University of Mississippi, played for t...

East Valley opened the scoring on Taryn Baxter's corner kick in the 34th minute. The Knights increased their lead with two goals in the second half. The Lady Knights outshot Cheney 12-3 with Nicole Rowley making nine saves. In what was a rainy game in Pullman, Cheney...
It was another rough night for the Cheney High football team, who lost to West Valley, 14-6, in their final home game of the season, Oct. 14. The Blackhawks (0-3 Great Northern League, 2-5 overall) have lost three of their last four contests. "Defensively, I think we are pretty darn good," head coach Bobby Byrd said. "Offensively, we just couldn't string together four solid quarters. Penalties kind of got in the way as well." The Eagles took the lead on quarterback Hunter...
The Cheney High volleyball team captured its second regular season Great Northern League championship after 3-0 sweeps over East Valley (Oct. 11), Pullman (Oct. 13) and Clarkston (Oct. 15). Unlike the 2015 season, the Blackhawks (9-1 GNL, 11-1 overall) will not have to share the title with another team. By winning the league, Cheney will host the District 7 tournament, have a bye to the championship round and will play the second-place team, Oct. 29. Head coach Heather...
