  • Medical Lake ends skid with win over Newport

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 16, 2014

Medical Lake's defense got pretty banged up over the past few weeks in one-sided losses. But last Friday night during the Cardinals' annual Homecoming and Hall of Fame football game it was the defense that administered the first aid in a 39-12 Northeast A League win over the Newport Grizzlies at Holliday Field. The Cardinals recorded 10 sacks and chased and harassed Newport quarterback Otis Smith all night. They forced him into an interception and an icing on the cake...

  • Blackhawks steamroll Moscow Bears 48-6

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

About the only thing the Cheney High School football team did wrong last Friday night against Idaho 4A school Moscow was let them score. The Blackhawks ran through, over and around the Bears for about a third of a mile in rushing yardage, getting three touchdowns from running back Austin Kline and two more from Brayden Butikofer in a 48-6 beat down of the visitors in Cheney's home opener. Kline capped a seven-play opening drive with a 20-yard scoring run, quarterback Josh...

  • Blackhawks sweep Eagles and Bantams

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 16, 2014

The Cheney High volleyball team appears to be gaining momentum as they approach the last couple of weeks of the regular season. Last week they swept both West Valley and Clarkston, 3-0 in both matches, in Great Northern League (GNL) play. The team traveled to West Valley, Oct. 9, where they beat the Eagles for the second time this season. The game scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22. Head coach Courtney Webb said her team played a solid game, both offensively and defensively. “We were getting a lot of digs and executing p...

  • Undermanned Lady Blackhawks lose close match at West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

Anytime an undermanned team can hold a defending league champion and potential state title contender to a single score, it’s a triumph for the underdog. The Cheney High School girls soccer team came close to that achievement on the road against defending Great Northern League champion West Valley, holding the 9-2-1 Eagles to a single goal until late in the game in the Lady Blackhawks 2-0 loss last Thursday. Cheney gave up a goal in the 20th minute on Morgan Williams’ shot, and played the Eagles pretty evenly, at least defensi...

  • Blackhawks earn cross country split with West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

In cross country, as in any other timed athletic event, not only seconds, but tenths and hundredths of seconds can make a difference between winning and coming up short. The Cheney Blackhawks boys cross country team got a taste of that last Wednesday against a very good West Valley team. The intensity of the competition could be seen on the runners faces throughout the course - not just the physical toll but also the mental as the Blackhawk and Eagles dueled each other for eve...

  • Picking football winners this year can give you a Mac-headache

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

Man, it’s not easy picking winners in football this year. It’s not easy in any pool, contest or at any level. The days of the traditional powers being sure bets, er, picks, in college or pro ball are gone, or at least they’re rapidly shifting. The challenge used to be trying to figure out the middle of the pack and also-ran teams. When it comes to the NFL, I’ve found CBSSports.com columnist Pete Prisco’s Power Rankings Tuesday morning to be fairly reliable, at least in the past. This year, team’s are moving up and down hi...

  • Northern Colorado visits for first time since 2010

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 16, 2014

Who are those strangers out on the red turf? Because of the addition of new teams to the Big Sky, the rotating schedule has left the University of Northern Colorado off the Eastern Washington schedule. The Eagles have not played the Bears since 2011 when they won 48-27 in Greeley. UNC last played in Cheney in 2010, falling 35-28. In year three under head coach Earnest Collins Jr., the Bears are 1-2 in Big Sky play, 2-4 overall. They've had a notable win, beating then No. 25...

  • Eastern collects big 42-30 win at Southern Utah

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 16, 2014

The spare parts Eastern Washington University has collected for its football team appear to be working just fine. In the absence of All-American quarterback Vernon Adams and rushing leader Quincy Forte, both sidelined with injuries, the Eagles installed Jordan West, Mario Brown and Jalen Moore into the lineup. They meshed just fine in a 42-30 Big Sky Conference win over Southern Utah University last Saturday at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City. Utah. West, a redshirt sophomore...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Oct 16, 2014

1 Years Ago Oct. 21, 2004 For the second time in two weeks, vandalism hit the city of Medical Lake as someone set fire to the skate park scorching a ramp in Pioneer Park. Three years after five Cheney residents were killed in a head-on collision on State Route 904, a safety project had cut serious accidents by nearly 60 percent. Data released by Eastern Washington University showed what many already believed — the school had a significant economic impact on Cheney pumping an estimated $31 million into the community. C...

  • Optometrists gain more knowledge of glaucoma

    Dr. SCOTT BORGHOLTHAUS, Contributor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

Our understanding of glaucoma has increased dramatically over the years. Originally it was discovered as a very high pressure in the eye; that occurred with severe pain inside the eye, and redness on the surface. This led to blindness, unless the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) was reduced substantially. Later it was discovered that blindness was occurring gradually in people with modestly high intraocular pressures. It was also noted that certain types of optic nerve changes were occurring along with the elevated IOP’s. As v...

  • All are invited to Tyler Grange's annual Harvest Dinner

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

There’s an old saying that a person sometimes hums, “mm-mm, good,” when they walk into a room where something is cooking. If you’re thinking of food, you’re right on target. The folks at Tyler Grange are preparing for their annual Harvest Dinner on Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar. I wonder how many years the Tyler Grange members have opened their doors to friends, relatives and neighbors in the community, giving their hospitality on this traditional, friendly evening? Tyler Grange provides...

  • We deserve another four years of Chase

    Updated Oct 16, 2014

As an Independent voter I have always put the value of good government over party politics. As County Commissioner my personal experience with Rob Chase as County Treasurer affirmed that Rob has the community’s best interest at heart. Rob recognized the need to reform state law so that those who fell on hard times could pay back their property taxes through partial payments. If not for Rob, many homeowners could lose their biggest asset if they can’t pay their back taxes in one lump sum. Now because of Rob, the county can...

  • Getting public officials off talking points is what citizens must do

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2014

As town hall meetings go, the Sept. 26 “Conversation with Cathy” with congressional 5th District Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers at Cheney’s Wren Pierson Community Center was definitely good political theater, if nothing else. But that’s part of the point — there was something else. A lot else, if you will, and too much to try to fit in one 704-word recap. One of the biggest “else’s” for me was how well prepared most of those in attendance were. A few were political operatives, if you will, such as Spokane County Democratic Part...

  • Legislature must fix common school funding sources

    Updated Oct 16, 2014

The Washington State School Directors’ Association recently made available its proposed legislative priorities for the 2015 legislative session. Delegates then ranked them, with the top three being: 1) Full funding of basic education (SLP), 2) Sustainable revenues for education funding (new) and 3) School construction funding (SLP).
