City also begins review and discussion of its 2010 budget at Tuesday night's meeting By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter When it came time to approve a financial guarantee by the city of Cheney to the city of Cheney, the response from City Council ranged from confusion to disgust to, finally, resignation. A Cheney ordinance requires a financial guarantee from contractors who do work for the city. So when it came time to mitigate the Miller Pond wetland, a space owned by the city near the wastewater treatment plant, the easiest,...

International Market follows Artist Cafe into retirement By LUELLA DOW Contributor The Artist Café, with its pretty colors and friendly atmosphere, is closed. The three sisters, Josie, Amor and Mila, who were known as “The Sweetest Jam,” are no longer there to greet you as you enter. However, the International Market is still open until Thanksgiving. “The kids,” Josie said, naming Omar, Lucille and Melanie, “now have their own careers.” And as in all families, circumstances ch...
A huge crowd and even bigger stakes were apparently not enough motivation for the Eastern Washington University volleyball team last Friday night as the Eagles fell to Portland State 3-1 in a pivotal Big Sky Conference match at Reese Court. With 1,440 looking on in a rematch of last year's Big Sky Conference championship match, the Eagles fell to the Vikings by 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17. The loss was Eastern's first in BSC play as they fell to 5-1 in league and 11-6 overall. Eastern embarks on a pivotal road trip, playing...
Lisa Dimak of the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the goalkeeper posted a pair of shutouts to help the Eagles to a 2-0 Big Sky record, its best start ever. Most notably was a save she had in the 78th minute of a 1-0 road win over Weber State on Thursday (Oct. 8). That kept the Wildcats out of the net, and the Eagles earned their first of 1-0 victories that day. It also marked Eastern's first win in eight tries over the Wildcats in Ogden,... Full story

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The jury's still out on whether Eastern Washington University will have an NCAA penalty that bans them from post-season play in 2009 lifted. But while Eastern waits to see if their case for a reversal of sanctions is granted, the university and the Spokane Regional Sports Commission (SRSC) are teaming to see if they can bring the 2011 through 2013 Football Championship Subdivision title game to the area. In an announcement made this past Monday,...
Mark Baker of Cheney used a tiebreaker to beat out Jay Lemaster of Medical Lake in week five of the Cheney Free Press football contest. Baker will receive a $50 gift certificate from an area merchant. Lemaster will receive a pair of tickets to a future Eastern Washington University home football game. Both Baker and Lemaster correctly selected the University of Washington to win their game against Arizona, but Baker was just three points off the final score. Be sure to get your chance to win by filling out the entry form...
Peter Loeffler was the top finisher for Medical Lake on the boy's side, finishing fourth with a time of 18 minutes, 35 seconds, but the Cardinals fell to Riverside 17-43 in a Great Northern League cross country race staged this past Tuesday at Bear Lake. Other Cardinals in the top-10 included Josh Stebbins (8th) 20:00, Casey Sweet (9th) 20:42 and Andrew Ryan (10) 20:54. Corbin Williamson (17:53), Max Winter (18:31) and Kyle Miller (18:32) led the race for the Rams. In the girls races, Amelia Cook's 22:34 topped all Medical... Full story

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter It took a while but Medical Lake's volleyball team finally broke through into the win column last Thursday night. But what better place to begin trying to salvage their season than by starting the second half of the Great Northern League schedule with a 3-1 victory over Deer Park. It's a contrast to the season's opening match – a 3-0 loss by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-13. The Cardinals took this one 25-16, 23-25, 25-11 and 25-20. They did w...
By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter There's not much to dislike about the start the Medical Lake Cardinals had in last Friday's Great Northern League football game against Pullman. It's what followed that had coach Wes Hobbs wondering and maybe scratching his head after a 23-13 loss to the Greyhounds at Holliday Field. Medical Lake (0-3 GNL, 2-4 overall) will try to get back their winning ways that saw them claim their final two non-league games, to score their first GNL win this...
M-m-m-man-n-n, f-f-f-fall is no time for b-b-b-base-b-b-b-ball By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Here's some advice, if you feel you need it. Never watch a Major League Baseball playoff game from Denver, Colo., in a house where the furnace doesn't work. And it's 25 degrees outside. That's what I did last Sunday night. With my furnace on the fritz (it's all better now) I tuned into the National League Division series between the defending World Series champs Philadelphia Phillies and the...
Blackhawks follow GNL CC victories with second-place finishes at Bullpup Invite By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Success continues to run with the Cheney cross country team as the boys and girls squads posted a pair of Great Northern League wins last Tuesday, and a couple of surprising finishes at the Bullpup Invitational on Saturday. The Blackhawks traveled to Clarkston to take on the Bantams and Medical Lake last Tuesday in league double-dual action, and emerged with two more wins. The boys downed Clarkston 22-39 and the Cardinals...
Lackluster play in loss at Pullman eclipsed by spirited five-game win over Riverside Rams By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Sometimes you never know how things will go in the sporting world. One moment you're up, the next moment you're down. The Cheney volleyball team experienced the reverse of that last week. The Blackhawks were, in the words of head coach Cassie Hare, “everything ugly” in a road-loss to Great Northern League leader Pullman (8-0, 12-1), and then two days later, poster kids for grit and determination in a 3-2 road win...
Wildcats score 12 points in final two minute of half to topple Eagles in Big Sky game, meet Grizzlies in Missoula By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter For more than 58 of the 60 minutes of last Saturday's football game with Weber State, the Eastern Washington University Eagles played some pretty good football. However, in the span of a mere 92 seconds at the end of the first half, the Wildcats scored 12 points that propelled them to a 31-13 Big Sky Conference win at Woodward Field....
Wins keep Cheney atop the Great Northern League By JOHN McCALLUM Editor If soccer has the baseball equivalent of a perfect game, the Cheney girls' team pitched two pretty close examples last week. The Blackhawks allowed Medical Lake no shots on goal in their 6-0 win on the road last Tuesday. Thursday at home against Pullman the Hawks dominated and controlled the Great Northern League's third place team for a 3-0 win, their eighth straight and sixth shutout of the season....
Cheney scores 29 points in final nine minutes to remain unbeaten in Great Northern League By JOHN McCALLUM Editor For Cheney head coach Jason Williams, Friday's home game with Colville truly was a tale of two halves – and then some. For the first two quarters, and well into the third, the Blackhawks seemed befuddled, having trouble containing the Indians' defensively, and failing to get much going offensively without a tremendous amount of effort. But late in the third, one c...
After eight months without a home, Cheney Historical Museum moves into new downtown location By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter A once empty storefront at 420 First St. is now home to the Cheney Historical Museum after eight months of displacement. It's a temporary home, but certainly better than the alternative for museum director Joan Mamanakis. “We're very grateful to be able to get the collection into an environmentally secure place,” she said. “But we're really excited to be...
