When Gov. Jay Inslee’s misguided vaccine mandate ended in May, his office said there would not be an outreach effort to rehire the more than 2,000 employees lost because of the condition for employment — even with staff shortages in the state workforce. Instead, fired state workers could reapply for their former jobs or seek new careers with the state just like everyone else. Fast-forward five months? The same executive tune is being sung, even with continued shortages and only 25.6% of Washingtonians up to date with COV...

Gov. Jay Inslee inappropriately used our state’s building codes to ban natural gas in new homes and commercial buildings. Now, the Biden Administration is going a step further issuing rules that drastically clamp down on natural gas used in heating and air conditioning units. Inslee’s regulations phase out fossil fuels used for heating water and cooking in new buildings by 2030. They were the first steps to eliminating natural gas in and around the house. Biden’s Dept. of Energy (DOE) proposes overly restrictive effic...

As I wait for the white fluff from the skies, visions of next year’s gardens dance in my head. I definitely plan to incorporate more pollinator friendly plants. I so enjoyed the antics of butterflies and hummingbirds and plan to accommodate them with even more delicacies. The hummers couldn’t seem to leave the honeysuckle vine climbing on my rock wall alone. And now though the tiny little birds have flown to warmer places, like many of my two legged friends, the shiny, bright red berries and late coral-red, yellow blooms have...
There’s a party going on in my back yard, and a good one too, from the looks of it. Seems like everyone is getting quite rowdy with the confetti of fall strewn everywhere. The Aspen tree is still a bit tipsy with its gorgeous, yellow leaves dancing precariously in the wind, leaves who are trying to stay, but must reluctantly let go and drift to the ground. Beyond are two Dogwoods and an Ornamental Pear, outfitted in shades of red, yellow and green, clinging to their dresses as they sober up for what’s to come, avoiding the...

The 2-hour, 35-minute event is different than a total solar eclipse, in that...
CHENEY -- With the luxury of having a top-notch facility in town at Eastern Washington University, Cheney High School offers swimming as a varsity sport when no others in the immediate area have. It has afforded not only Cheney students, but others from area schools the opportunity to compete. Coach Jennifer Hochwalt's roster has 13 swimmers from Cheney, but the team's numbers swell to about 20 when co-op athletes from other area schools are added. Attending Mead High School,...
