  • ALERT- Box culvert collapse on Cheney Spokane Road

    Updated Oct 14, 2015

The collapse of a box culvert along a stretch of the Cheney-Spokane Road between Gardner and Sherman roads has weakened asphalt in the area and created a traffic alert. Spokane County Road Department officials originally decided to close the road and detour traffic around the collapse. After further inspection, county engineers have elected not to detour traffic, but instead route motorists around the breach by using traffic cones, barricades and reduced speed. The weakened portion of the roadway is in the center of the...

  • Efficient Lakeside rolls over Medical Lake, 49-12

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 8, 2015

The numbers on the scoreboard, a 49-12 Medical Lake loss to Lakeside last Friday in a Northeast A League football game were secondary in the mind of Cardinals' head coach Wes Hobbs. Foremost was the health of senior quarterback Cory Wagner who exited the game after halftime nursing a sore shoulder. "We don't know, it's going to be a late-in-the- week decision," Hobbs said as the Cardinals (0-3 NEA, 0-5 overall) prepare for a Friday, Oct. 9 road game at Newport (0-3, 2-3) at 7...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 8, 2015

The first of consecutive big cross country showdowns for Medical Lake turned out to be a relative dud last Wednesday when Deer Park cruised to easy wins in both boy's and girl's competition. Deer Pfark's boys scored a 22-42 win over Medical Lake while the Lady Stags had an equally easy time of it, winning 24-49. Medical Lake did score twin wins over Colville, however with the boys winning 42-61 and the girls collecting a 49-56 victory. "We definitely under achieved, other than...

  • Lady Blackhawks experience shooting woes in GNL losses

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 8, 2015

At first glance, the Cheney High girls soccer team’s shutout losses to East Valley and at Clarkston last week might indicate the Lady Blackhawks are having trouble scoring. Head coach Nels Radtke said it goes further than that. “We’re having trouble shooting,” Radtke said. Indeed, Cheney managed just one shot in each game, a 3-0 loss Sept. 29 at home to the Knights and a 2-0 setback Oct. 1 at Clarkston, while the Lady Blackhawks’ Great Northern League opponents combined for 25 shots on goal. On the flipside, Radtke said the d...

  • Glasgow's EWU Hall-of-Fame vote is well-deserved honor

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 8, 2015

Perhaps the most unusual thing about the induction of Medical Lake's Gary Glasgow into the Eastern Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame is that the sport he was originally recruited to the school to play is not why he is being recognized. "They recruited me to play football," Glasgow said, but the man who defined the term multi-sport standout for the Cardinals in the early 1960s will be honored for his baseball skills. "I played (football) about two weeks then decided...

  • Medical Lake volleyball snaps long winless streak

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 8, 2015

Volleyball’s keys to success rest with winning the battles for key statistical categories such as kills, aces and digs. Medical Lake head volleyball coach Kari Knowlton added another element — a kick in the butt. The ”kick” was figuratively of course but Knowlton’s certain it helped the team end three seasons of frustration and earn them a 3-1 Northeast A League victory, Oct. 1 at Riverside (0-6 NEA, 0-7 overall) as Medical Lake rallied from a 25-23 loss in game one to claim...
