By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter If effort counted for any points in the standings, Medical Lake's girls' soccer team might at least find themselves in the middle of the pack. But it's goals that lead to wins and they continue to be very hard to come by during this Great Northern League season where the Cardinals find themselves 1-4 and 2-6 overall prior to games this week. Medical Lake was at league co-leading Pullman this past Tuesday to conclude the first half of the GNL season and visit the other top team, East Valley in a...

In a 2-1 vote last week Spokane County commissioners Todd Mielke and Mark Richard overruled commissioner Bonnie Mager to sanction the 40-acre site, located about five miles east of the city of Medical Lake near Interstate 90. Mielke and Richard also voted to declare an emergency, providing time for...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor It's a good thing Cheney volleyball head coach Cassie Hare checked the fine print when she signed her contract to coach the Lady Hawks three years ago. Especially the part that read “extra duties.” Those duties apparently include exorcism, or something close, at least in the Lady Hawks performance in game one of their match last Thursday with visiting Deer Park. “We couldn't really tell where it was coming from but there was a real negative energy on ou...
By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter A $500,000 application to build fields and infrastructure at the park on Betz Road was recently ranked second in the state by the Recreation and Conservation Office. City leaders are celebrating the top ranking—which would ensure funding in a typical year—but warn that the funding may be at risk as state budget deficits loom. “We're very excited about it,” parks and recreation director Paul Simmons said. “We've owned that land for 13 years and...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney's cross country teams swept a double-dual meet last Thursday at the Fairways Golf Course, giving the Blackhawk boys their first Great Northern League wins and keeping the girls perfect. The Cheney girls placed all seven of their varsity runners in the top 10 to easily down both East Valley and Medical Lake 19-42 and...
Eastern students to complete historical survey at Cronk's Hill By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter The hill stood long before Cheney existed. It played an important role in local history long before it was a popular sledding hill or the site of proposed school fields. The hill is known as Cronk's Hill, though it gets its name from George Crunk, who homesteaded in the area during the period around 1878 when the hill served as a fort and later as one of the first schools in the...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney girls' swimming head coach Jennifer Hochwalt knew last Saturday's meet with Selah High School in Yakima would be challenging so it was no surprise when her Blackhawks left Lions Pool having been doused 109-61 by the Vikings. What did surprise her was her young Blackhawks, who managed to nab more points than expected. Heather Spall and Jenna Riley led Cheney with a pair of first place finishes each. Spall was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 11.34 seconds, 3.5 seconds...

By PHIL KIVER Contributor Another horrific season for the Seattle Mariners. We were both born in 1977 so I can certainly identify with their woes. As a Homer for the M's I was following Ichiro all season long. It should not be a secret to a fan that he had his 10th year in a row with over 200 hits. However he has been slighted by the press with their omissions from the coverage. When the statistics are laid before you, the argument that he is the greatest hitter that ever lived will be apparent even to the ghost of Ted...

1 Years Ago Oct. 12, 2000 Medical Lake resident Ken Guidry is leading the organization of a citizen's group that will work to oppose locating a halfway house for sex offenders in the city. “A measured, articulate response is going to be more effective than an emotional response,” Guidry said. The Cheney Planning Commission is still agonizing over making a decision on whether to allow manufactured homes in single-family residential areas. The question has moved past simply whether they will be allowed to making sure such str...
