There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Jerry Dipoto. The Seattle Mariners announced, on Sept. 28, they hired Dipoto as the team’s new general manager. He was officially introduced at a press conference on Tuesday. Dipoto couldn’t have come to the Mariners at a better time. He replaces Jack Zduriencik, who Seattle fired in August. Zduriencik, led Seattle for seven seasons and while he enjoyed some success in 2009 and 2014, his seven-year plan to bring the team to the postseason failed. While initial reports had Seatt...

Recovering a fumbled kickoff return, the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard after running back Fernando Cid-Reyes scored a 20-yard touchdown. • Looking Back

    Updated Oct 1, 2015

1 Years Ago Oct. 5, 2005 A recently released study by a consulting firm told the Cheney Light Department it has three options in order to combat rising wholesale electrical rates. Those include doing business as usual with rate increases, outsource services such as meter reading or sell the utility. The recently revived Cheney Parks and Recreation Department, which reopened in 2004, was looking for input from city residents to help chart its future. The return of football to the campus of Cheney High School for the first...

  • I'm not a fan of these overused phrases

    JOHN SOENNICHSEN, Contributor|Updated Oct 1, 2015

Back when I was an impressionable teenager, I used popular sayings such as “bitchen,” “far out” and “groovy.” This kept me in good graces with the cool kids. It also kept me on top of current words used by the “in crowd.” I mention this only because I’m about to discuss the absurdity of today’s clichéd phrases. I want it clear that I understand how the use of certain words and phrases can determine whether a person is on top of things or hopelessly out of synch with contemporary society. That said, I think most of today...

  • Moving Fed Bank money to highways doesn't fix problem

    ED FEULNER, Contributor|Updated Oct 1, 2015

Frustrated voters sometimes denounce their representatives as “good for nothing,” but are they being fair? Consider the budget gimmicks some politicians come up with. When it comes to fiscal gymnastics, who can deny their creativity? Case in point: a plan to fund the mismanaged Highway Trust Fund by tapping the dividends that the Federal Reserve pays member banks. Seriously, stick with me here, because this is a doozy. Here we have federal highway spending, operating at a deficit. Duh, it’s run by politicians. Of cours...

  • ASCO recomendations more harmful than helpful

    ROBERT GOLDBERG, Contributor|Updated Oct 1, 2015

A group of doctors has decided to rewrite the Hippocratic Oath. The ancient pledge charges physicians with applying “all measures that are required” to help the sick. The American Society of Clinical Oncology wants to add a caveat —”unless those measures are too expensive. Then let the patient die.” The oncologists’ group has developed a “conceptual framework” that relies on cost-benefit analysis to determine the most “valuable” treatments for different patients. Sounds innocent enough. But healthcare outcomes cannot be...

  • Republicans targeting Planned Parenthood is childish

    Updated Oct 1, 2015

Planned Parenthood, a non-profit organization that provides reproductive health as well as maternal and child health services, has become a legislative target. Since July, Senate Republicans have made it their mission to take away the organization’s federal funding after an undercover video from anti-abortion groups supposedly revealed Planned Parenthood was profiting from selling fetal parts for medical research. Senate Republicans introduced a spending bill that would strip Planned Parenthood’s funding for the year, whi...
