    Professional forklift drivers in eastern Washington are invited to compete July 28 in a forklift rodeo at Spokane Community College. Those who place first, second and third will win prizes ranging from $100 to $300. In all, the top seven drivers will receive a cash prize.     On Saturday, July 21, Medical Lake Police Department will host its second annual Fun Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Washington, all proceeds going to support athletes in Medical Lake.   • Spokane Regional Health District issues heat advisories

    With more days of high temperatures still to come, the Spokane Regional Health District has issued a health advisory for heat-related illness. Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. “Heat can cause very serious medical problems for anyone, but those most at risk for heat-related illness are the very young, the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions,” Bill Edstrom, epidemiologist for the Spokane Regional Health District, stated in a pre...

    By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter Spokane Transit Authority was recently awarded a grant from the Washington state Department of Ecology to reduce diesel engine emissions on many of its buses. The grant was initially awarded in 2006 for $121,500 – specifically, to install crankcase filtration systems. That figure was increased, however, to $268,500 to allow for the installation of additional equipment. The Airway Heights City Council unanimously agreed Monday night to kick start annexation proceedings for nearly eight acres of property west of Craig Road and north of Highway 2.     Photo by Mike Huffman Fire destroys home A fire, which started in the garage, destroyed a home Friday at 8215 S. Sherman, just off the Cheney-Spokane Road and east of Marshall. The fire began about 2 p.m. in the garage and was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived to put out the blaze. No one was injured, according to Bruce Holloway, District 3 fire chief.   • Auto collision near Morton, Wash., claims life of Cheney pastor's wife

    By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter Phyllis Roberts, the wife of the Cheney West Side Chapel pastor, was killed instantly in a head-on collision three miles east of Morton, Wash., shortly after 9 p.m. on July 10. Terry Roberts, 51, was admitted to Morton General Hospital with fractured ribs following the wreck – which occurred after an oncoming car crossed the centerline – but was released shortly afterward, according to a report released by the Washington State Patrol.     By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Hot weather and very dry conditions have led Spokane County officials to declare a 60-day burning ban, effective last Friday, July 13. Spokane County Building Official Jim Manson, who is also the county's Fire Marshal, ordered the ban, which prohibits open burning and recreational fires within unincorporated areas of the county.
