  • Letters to the editor

Voters should oppose privatization of state liquor industry Accolades to the Cheney City Council for publicly opposing both proposals to privatize the state liquor industry. And accolades to the Cheney Free Press for putting the action of the City Council on the front page (“Cheney council opposes liquor initiatives,” Sept. 16). In my opinion it is front-page news, and it is my hope that every city council in the state of Washington will follow suit. Both proposals to privatize are only a smokescreen by the liquor ind...

  • Cardinals rally in game five to earn season's first volleyball victory

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter A win is a win no matter who it comes against or how long it takes says Medical Lake's new volleyball coach Julie Smith. It took four tries but last Thursday at home the Cardinals got their first victory for both the team and coach this year with a 3-2 win over Deer Park in Medical Lake, 25-12, 21-25, 17-25, 25-15 and 16-14. That earned Smith's team a split in their week's games after dropping a 3-0 decision to East Valley on Tuesday. “Our goal this week was to find our fighter mentality, to p...

  • Cardinals' soccer still can't find net

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake's goal scoring woes are going hand in hand with their mounting injury report it would seem. The Cardinals were shutout in a pair of Great Northern League games last week, 5-0 at home Tuesday against East Valley and 3-0 at Deer Park last Thursday. The loss of scoring might be attributed to last year's leading scorer Sam Kelly going out with an undisclosed hip injury at Deer Park. “We're not real sure, she didn't break anything but she'll be out for a while,” Medical Lake head coa...

  • Medical Lake suffers 24-23 overtime loss to Lakeside

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter One of these days the bounces just have to go the other way. When that day arrives – and the laws of nature say it will happen – Medical Lake might be able to get on the right side of the score, not the 24-23 defeat they suffered in overtime last Friday night to the Lakeside Eagles at Holladay Field. Quarterback Zach Warlick's successful 2-point run on the conversion after he found Kinner Blum all alone in the end zone for a touchdown on their first possession of OT earned the Eagles (1-2) their...

That didn't stop the Blackhawks from qualifying six swimmers for 2A Eastern Washington district meet competition, and one swimmer achieving a qualifying tim...

Jarrett field goal, Williams' fumble return helps EWU to first Cheney win over Montana since ‘91 By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Somehow football games between Eastern Washington University and the University of Montana just seem destined for dramatic endings. And last Saturday's meeting, won by the Eagles 36-27 in the debut of the new Roos Field red turf, was no different. No matter where or when - in the wild or on the football field - a Grizzly is just darn tough to bring down. So even after Eastern had broken a 27-27 tie w...

  • Crunch Time for September 23, 2010

Son says Woodward would like new turf, stadium name, once he got used to it By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter In the matter of just a few seconds last week history was both made and changed on the Eastern Washington University campus. Last Saturday night, 20 years of field futility ended when, with just four seconds on the clock, Mike Jarrett's third field goal of the game provided the winning points in Eastern Washington University's eventual 36-27 football victory over the Montana Grizzlies. It was the first win over the Griz...
