In a Sept. 19 news release, the Washington state Department of Natural Resources announced while the burn ban east of the Cascade Mountain Range is still in effect, it will allow campfires in pits in designated campgrounds. DNR also lifted the burn ban west of the Cascades. There are exceptions. Due to continued high fire danger, campfires may not be allowed in some locations in northeast Washington. County burn bans may still be in effect in various locations throughout Washington and DNR recommends that citizens check with...

Zamora shares Big Sky defensive honor Senior Miquiyah Zamora was rewarded for his performance, but his versatility was just as impressive. The Eastern Washington University senior linebacker was honored as co-Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Eagles to a 34-30 win over No. 10 Northern Iowa thanks to Eastern’s best defensive performance in 15 games. He was the first Eagle honored with that award since Ronnie Hamlin earned the honor twice in 2012. He shared the award with North Dakota c...
Medical Lake head volleyball coach Todd Harr called last week, “Another tough week of competition,” following losses of 3-1 at home to Riverside and 3-0 on the road at Colville. The Cardinals remain winless at 0-4 in Northeast A League play and 0-5 overall. In their 11-25, 17-25, 25-22, 12-25 loss to Riverside (1-3 NEA, 1-3 overall), “This match summed up our season as we had a couple games where we struggled to compete and in the third game we were able to put it all toget...
Deer Park might still be the team to beat in Northeast A League cross country, but Medical Lake seems to be figuring a way to make them look behind to see who’s catching up. That’s what Cardinals’ head coach Gene Blankenship thought following his team’s fourth-place overall finish in last Saturday’s Seaport Invite at Clarkston, Wash. Medical Lake, with 107 points, finished second in the small-school division to Deer Park’s 61. Lewiston was the overall boys’ champ with 38. “We...
The Freeman Scotties might need a new mascot. A massive Mastiff or a lumbering Norwegian Elkhound come to mind after they literally ran over the Medical Lake Cardinals last Friday, 51-0 in the start of Northeast A League play. The game, which went into running time under the “mercy rule” after Freeman surpassed the 50-point mark on a safety with 4 minutes, 59 seconds to play in the third quarter, went sideways for the Cardinals almost immediately. On the second play of the...
Medical Lake had a week like they have not experienced in years for its girl’s soccer program with a pair of Northeast A League wins — 2-1 over Riverside and 3-1 at Colville — before taking 2A Pullman to a shootout, and losing 2-1, Sept. 17. The result has Medical Lake (3-1 NEA, 3-3 overall) right in the shadow of league-leading Deer Park (3-0, 4-1). The teams met for the first time this season this past Tuesday, Sept. 20. Deer Park is the defending NEA champs and made it to...
The Cheney High volleyball team went 1-1 in Great Northern League matches this past week, first sweeping Clarkston, 3-0, on Sept. 13, then getting swept by West Valley, 3-0, Sept. 15. While Cheney defeated Clarkston in three sets (27-25, 25-14 and 27-25), the win was anything but easy. The difficulties started early for the Blackhawks after setter Peyton Stark left the match with a sprained ankle. Head coach Heather Zorrozua shifted to a new formation and placed Rylie Pease in the setter spot. Pease lead her team with 12...

The Cheney High girls’ soccer team continued their undefeated streak in Great Northern League play after a 3-2 win over Clarkston (Sept. 13) and a 3-0 shutout over West Valley two days later. In the Clarkston match, the Lady Blackhawks were tied 2-2 with two minutes to play when Kailey Estrellado, with an assist from Gabby Nguyen, scored the winning goal. “Clarkston has had our number in the last four years,” head coach Nels Radtke said. “It was good to finally beat them.” After a scoreless first half, both teams turned up...
Is it really the media and the police’s fault for the Washington State University football team’s recent troubles off the gridiron? That’s a question that has been running through my mind in the last couple of weeks relating to the four arrests of several WSU football players — most recently Robert Barber and T.J. Fehoko, who were arrested for second-degree assault in connection with an altercation July 23 in Pullman that left one student with a concussion and another with a broken jaw. There have been 29 player arrests...
One nagging losing streak ended last Saturday when Eastern Washington topped Northern Iowa 34-30 at Roos Field in an ending those who saw it either live or on television will remember for years. The Eagles used a fake field goal call with 43 seconds to play where holder/quarterback Riley Hennessey found tight end Beau Byus for a 23-yard scoring connection. A fumble on NIU's final possession, forced by Jim Townsend, and recovery by Samson Ebukam, sealed the victory, a first...
By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The final score of the Cheney High School girls swimming team's dual meet with Ellensburg last Friday may not have been to the Blackhawks liking, but the individual results were more than satisfactory to their head coach. Cheney fell 90-80 to the visiting Bulldogs, a much better result between two more evenly matched teams than last year's103 – 60 loss on the road. But in narrowly missing a win, the Blackhawks qualified for state in three more e...
It was another tough night at Tom Oswald Field for the Cheney High football team, who lost to 4A Inland Empire League's Post Falls, 21-0, Sept. 16. The Blackhawks' defense managed to keep the Trojans at bay for most of the first quarter, until Nate Beur's 49-yard scoring pass to Michael Mills, followed by a successful PAT to make the score 7-0. Braedan Vaughn's 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter put Post Falls up 13-0 heading into halftime. Head coach Bobby Byrd...
