    The Cheney High girls cross country team turned in a second-place performance in the 5,000-meter small school varsity division at the Coeur d’Alene Invitational last Saturday at the Hayden Canyon course in Hayden, Idaho. The Blackhawks were out-pointed 47-63 by Northeast A League’s Colville. Cheney’s boys finished sixth overall in the same division with 164 points.     Cheney High’s girls swimming team “did good” in their first turn in the competitive pool last Saturday at Ellensburg. The Blackhawks came up on the short end of the team scoring, however, losing 105-65 to a Bulldogs team Cheney head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said was very experienced and fast. Isabell Williams notched the only first-place finish for the Blackhawks, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 12.40 seconds, with Echo Mecklenburg not far back in third in 1:18.22.     Medical Lake volleyball had a winless week, but were ever so close to earning their first set victory of the season. In the span of four days, the Cardinals lost 3-0 matches to Newport, Riverside and Colville.     Gubrud’s big day earns Big Sky award Thanks to a 650-yard offensive explosion by the Eagles, Gage Gubrud, Eastern Washington University’s junior All-America quarterback, was selected as the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Sept. 18, following in a 56-21 blowout victory over Fordham.     The Cheney High School girls soccer split their matches last week, dropping their Great Northern League season-opener at Clarkston, 3-1, but rebounding for a convincing 5-0 non-league win over Greater Spokane League’s Shadle Park on the home pitch Saturday.
