At the left, Spokane’s Tyler King (7) and Keanu Yamamoto (20) try to check Americans’ Braden Purtill (32) whose pass turned into an assist on his team’s first goal....
Medical Lake may have dropped its first two matches of the Northeast A League season but new head coach Amanda Higgins is pulling some small victories out of their 0-2 start. The Cardinals (0-2 NEA, 2-4 all games) visited Newport last Tuesday, falling 3-1 by scores of 24-26, 25-20, 8-25, 21-25. Medical Lake had the finish down just fine in their opening week. Something happened, however, between their Week-1 win, 32-28 at home versus St. Maries and last Friday night’s 28-16 setback at Bonners Ferry. The hometown Badgers (2-1) got the lead for good, 21-16, on the first of two Anthony Skeen touchdown runs with 11 minutes, 9 seconds to play after Medical Lake turned the ball over deep in its own territory. “They were resilient, they’re tough kids playing on their home...
Medical Lake head cross country coach Gene Blankenship might not know exactly what to take out of his team’s performance at last Saturday’s Highlander Invitational at Shadle Park High School. But whatever it ends up being, this race ultimately promises to at least give his runners more opportuniuty to improve their times. The Highlander is a huge event that attracted 34 teams from every level of school in three states. And because his runners sometimes competed against big...
The Cheney High School volleyball team is off to a strong start after its first week of regular seasaon play, doing well right out of the gate. Last week, the team came up with two wins and sits atop the GNL standings 1-0 (2-0 all games). The team hasn’t yet lost a set in its regular schedule. The strong play started against North Central last week, “We started out a little slow, but did a really good job of controlling the match,” head coach Brianne Lowe said. Senior Ashley Seiler led the Blackhawks in kills with 13, and s...
Eastern Washington will take its 3-8 preseason record, and strides made during playing some of the toughest volleyball teams in the nation into tonight’s Big Sky Conference opening match against Sacramento State beginning at 6 p.m. at Reese Court. The Eagles were beaten last Saturday 3-0 by USC, the nation’s top-ranked collegiate team by scores of 12-25, 23-25, 21-25 in the wrap-up of the University of San Diego Tournament. Earlier in the day EWU fell to host USD (3-0), the country’s No. 9 team, by scores of 16-25, 12-25...
Four weeks ago, looking three weeks into their football schedule, not many would have likely pegged Eastern Washington to be where they’re at right now. In the stats that really count category, that would be a 2-1 won-lost record following the Eagles’ 33-21 loss at Toledo last Saturday. Not a lot of people figured Eastern would cover the nearly four-score point spread those odds-maker experts rolled out, let alone conquer it in their stunning 49-46 victory over No. 25 Ore...
After challenging the Toledo Rockets and beating them off the launch pad, Eastern Washington ran out of fuel in a 33-21 nonconference loss last Saturday at the Glass Bowl in the Ohio city along Lake Erie. The Mid American Conference Football Bowl Subdivision Rockets (1-2) played a turnover-free game in handing the Big Sky Conference Eagles (2-1) their first defeat of the season. While Eastern’s two turnovers – a fumble and an interception – didn’t lead to Toledo points,...
Tired legs and a short bench played as much a role as quality of opponent in the Cheney girls’ soccer team’s first loss last week. The Lady Hawks were playing their third game in four days, in losing 5-0 at home against Greater Spokane League 4A Lewis and Clark on Friday. Cheney head coach Nils Radtke said they knew the Tigers would be strong, and wanted to turn in a good showing, which they did in the second half by limiting the visitors to just one goal. But Cheney was als...
The hardest aspects of last Saturday’s game at Omak for the Cheney High football team wasn’t on the field – it was on the road. The road as in asphalt, lane striping and in the Blackhawks’ case, a pair of flat tires, one delaying their arrival at Omak’s Pioneer Field and the other that led to a very late arrival back home Saturday morning. In between were 48 minutes of a football game pretty much dominated by Cheney, scoring 35 straight points en route to a 42-6 win over the Pioneers of the 1A Caribou Trail League. Cheney qu...
It’s tough enough getting on a cross country course for the first time in a season and facing competition other than from teammates. Add in searing blue skies, hot, 90-degree plus temperatures, a fleeting hint of wind and a tad muggy air conditions, and you’ve got what Cheney runners faced last Saturday at Shadle Park High School during the Highlander Invitational. Even with those conditions, the impacts of which were shown on many runners, Blackhawks head coach Jay Mar...
This week all of the globe enjoys roughly 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of night. The “reason for the season” relates to the Earth’s orbit around the sun. During summertime, our planet’s north pole points mildly toward the sun and those of us in the northern hemisphere get more than 12 hours of sunlight. During the winter the north pole is pointed away from the sun and the southern hemisphere enjoys more sunlight while we northerners shiver in the dark. Now, at the start of fall, we stand at the in-between time. I’ve be...
