    A small fire at Eastern Washington University knocked out phone communications to the Cheney Police Department and other city departments and services early Monday evening, Aug. 31. Police Chief John Hensley said a contractor was cutting concrete in a utility tunnel on Eastern's campus when flying sparks ignited a small fire. The fire burned through insulation in communications wiring in the tunnel and severed the fiber optic cable serving the city.     After an impressive weekend between the pipes, junior goalkeeper Mallory Taylor has been named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, Aug. 25. Taylor, a transfer from Hastings College, made her Eastern debut this past weekend as the Eagles opened their 2015 campaign with back-to-back 2-1 victories at UTEP and New Mexico State. The Nova Scotia native made six saves against the Miners last Friday, Aug. 21, before stopping seven shots versus the Aggies on Sunday, Aug. 23....

    Stephen C. Hiatt, 50, passed away in his sleep on Aug. 19, 2015 at his home in Medical Lake. He was born Jan. 30, 1965 in Stuttgart, Ark. He attended Hernando High School and enlisted in the Air Force in 1994. Stephen served 10 years in the Air Force and worked as a long haul truck driver for 17. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR.
