  • The great eclipse of 2017 was disappointing

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 24, 2017

As 1950s flame-thrower Peggy Lee used to belt out in her signature song, “Is that all there is?” That’s what I thought sitting along Washington Street during “Eclipse Day.” Of course it didn’t help to suddenly discover that when it was time to go, my car battery had died, a perfect metaphor for a day that once had lots of electricity but it was slowly drained as the eclipse ran its course. As I made the journey to Cheney from home in the Spokane Valley one could not help bu...

  • Removing memorials doesn't eliminate problem

    Updated Aug 24, 2017

It’s a shade over 2,500 miles from Cheney to Charlottesville, Va. That’s a mere one day and 13 hour drive Mapquest says, presumably driving non-stop via Interstate 90 and 94. But if you’ve driven in that cross country direction before it seems to take that much time just to pass through Montana and whichever Dakota you choose. The illustration of time and distance is provided to further illustrate not only the physical divide, but the cultural differences that sometime define North and South. Charlottesville seems to be the a...

  • Bene's will open in former Top of the Line location

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Aug 24, 2017

They did prove both naysayers and history wrong. And now LaShay and Lonnie Germain are moving on from Cheney where they operated the Top of the Line Café until July 30. Next March would have been the four-year anniversary of the business. They will open the Monroe Street Grill - a former Shari's Restaurant - at the intersection where Monroe, Indiana and Northwest Boulevard meet. The Germains made a location that briefly housed four previous eateries a success, enough so that...

  • Brown considers run

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 24, 2017

If the reaction from the 20–25 people gathered at Cheney's Mason Jar last Saturday to hear Lisa Brown speak is any indication, it should be obvious to the former state legislator and current Washington State University-Spokane chancellor what decision people, at least fellow Democrats, want her to make about running for a congressional seat. "Lisa Brown is here," Cheney City Councilwoman Teresa Overhauser said by way of introduction. "I am hopeful you will all join with me i...

The most recent came from a report on Aug. 16 for a fire at Coney Island Park. “Somebody deliberately lit the toilet paper dispenser on fire,” Stevens said. Since it was a brick building there was only minor smoke damage with the dispenser needing to be replaced. A couple of weeks earlier a small blaze was discovered to have taken...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Aug 24, 2017

It was a routine night of reports and business at the Aug. 15 Medical Lake City Council meeting, a recorded review showed. • Roos eclipse experience

    John McCallum|Updated Aug 23, 2017

There was a long line for viewing glasses, but only several hundred available. Those who did get a pair, or brought their own, used them in a variety of ways: traditional or in front of a cellphone lens. Others went old-fashioned and constructed a viewing box out of their favorite cereal container. Many utilized the club's telescopes with their cellphones or their eyes through a solar filter. A few went industrial with welder's masks, while some did creative things with... Full story
